Delhi to Dehradun With a Dog
Around 6 hours of driving each way, roughly 260km by road. Comfortable to do in a day with breaks.
Written for the journey in both directions. Dehradun back to Delhi is the same road with the light behind you.
The drive itself
Roughly 6 hours from Delhi on a mostly good road, which is comfortably done in one day. It is the natural base for Mussoorie an hour above, so many people stay in the valley and drive up for the day.
Railhead if you would rather not drive: Dehradun, in the city itself, with an overnight train from Delhi.
Leaving Delhi
Dehradun lies north east of Delhi, roughly 260km by road. Leaving Delhi is the first hour of any trip and the worst. Aim to clear the city before 6am or after 10pm, because the ring roads and the NH exits are where a seven hour drive becomes nine. In winter, fog on the northern highways delays departures more reliably than traffic does.
Of the 57 destinations we cover, Dehradun is the 5th closest to Delhi. That makes it one of the easiest trips you can take from here.
Closer from Delhi, if this is further than you wanted
- Delhi to Rishikesh , about 6 hours, riverside in Uttarakhand
- Delhi to Chandigarh , about 5 hours, city in Chandigarh
- Delhi to Jaipur , about 5 hours, heritage in Rajasthan
Dehradun in one paragraph
Most useful as a comfortable overnight break before continuing to Mussoorie or the higher hills, which turns a punishing single-day drive into two easy ones.
The full Dehradun guide goes into the terrain, what the two of you can do there, the places dogs are turned away from and the local hazards.
Veterinary access at the far end
Good for a hill town. Several private clinics, and Dehradun is the referral point for the whole Garhwal region.
Write the number down as well as saving it. Phone batteries choose their moments. Emergency vets by city.
Timing it from Delhi
Delhi is the hardest climate in this list for a dog. Summer runs past 45C from May, and heatstroke cases climb through it. Winter smog is genuinely difficult for flat faced breeds and older dogs with any respiratory weakness.
Diwali is the busiest week of the year for Delhi emergency clinics, between firework injuries and dogs who have bolted. May and June are the heat months.
Set that against Dehradun, where the advice is to go september to april and avoid May and June. The overlap between those two windows is your actual travel season, and it is usually narrower than either one suggests on its own.
Doing this journey with your dog
At around 6 hours this is a comfortable single day out of Delhi. Water is the thing people underestimate. Offer it at every stop even when the dog refuses, because a dog that has been panting for two hours in a car is losing more than it looks. At 6 hours you want three stops minimum. A parked car in Indian sun reaches temperatures that kill inside ten minutes, and a cracked window changes nothing.

Questions people ask
How far is Dehradun from Delhi?
Roughly 260km by road, north east of Delhi, which is about 6 hours of driving. That is an estimate rather than a looked-up figure, and the real time depends on how long it takes to clear Delhi and on the last stretch.
Can I do Delhi to Dehradun in a day with a dog?
Comfortably, provided you clear Delhi before the traffic builds. 6 hours of driving becomes 8 if you leave at nine.
Where should I stop between Delhi and Dehradun?
Nothing on our list sits neatly on this corridor, so plan stops around fuel and food rather than destinations. Every two hours, water each time.
What is the best time to visit Dehradun with a dog?
September to April. Avoid May and June, because heat.
Do I need to book pet friendly stays in Dehradun ahead?
Yes, and confirm by phone rather than trusting a listing. Properties marked pet friendly frequently turn out to mean small dogs only, or specific rooms, or an undisclosed fee. Get the size limit in writing.
What should I pack for Delhi to Dehradun?
Water and a collapsible bowl, their own food rather than a new one, the physical vaccination card, any medication, a spare lead, poo bags and an old towel. The vaccination card is the item people leave behind and then need.
These figures are estimated from geography rather than read off a map service. They hold up well enough for deciding whether a trip is a day or two, and less well for deciding what time you arrive.
