Three facts decide it, and none of them are opinions
Coat structure, muzzle length, and the climate the breed was developed for. A double coated dog carries insulation it cannot take off. A flat faced dog cannot pant efficiently, and panting is the entire cooling system. A breed developed for alpine rescue is carrying equipment for a different job.
Everything else is management. Almost any breed can be kept well in India by someone willing to restructure the day around it, and almost any breed can suffer badly with an owner who will not.
Humidity beats temperature
Dogs cool by evaporating moisture from the tongue and airway. Evaporation slows as the surrounding air gets wetter, so a humid 33C in Mumbai is more dangerous than a dry 38C in Jaipur, even though the second number looks worse.
This is why coastal cities are harder on thick coated breeds than the temperature alone suggests, and why airflow does more good than simply turning a thermostat down.
Do not shave a double coat
The undercoat insulates in both directions. It keeps cold out in winter and keeps heat off the skin in summer, and it reflects sun. Shaving it removes that protection, exposes skin that has never seen direct sun, and often damages regrowth permanently.
Brushing out dead undercoat is the thing that genuinely helps. A groomer who offers to shave your Husky for the summer is offering to make the problem worse.
What goes wrong
- Walking at the wrong hour. Pavement stays hot long after sunset in dry heat. Hold the back of your hand to it for five seconds first.
- Shaving a double coated breed.
- Trusting a dog to stop. Labradors and working breeds will run themselves into heatstroke rather than quit.
- Using ice water to cool an overheated dog. Cool water is right, and ice constricts surface vessels and slows heat loss.

Heatstroke signs, because this is the failure mode
Heatstroke damages organs before an animal looks critical, and in flat faced breeds it escalates faster than owners expect.
- Frantic heavy panting that does not settle with rest
- Bright red or very dark gums
- Thick ropey drool
- Unsteadiness, confusion, or a dog that lies down and will not get up
- Vomiting or diarrhoea after heat exposure

Can a Labrador survive in India?
Yes, and they are the most popular dog in the country. The double coat and the willingness to keep running are the two risks. Walk at dawn and dusk through summer, brush out the dead undercoat, and never trust a Labrador to stop before it overheats.
Can a Saint Bernard survive in India?
In the hills, comfortably. On the plains it is very hard to do well, because a giant body, a heavy double coat and a shortened muzzle all work against cooling at once. It can be done with air conditioning and a strict routine, and it is worth asking honestly whether that is sustainable for ten years.
Can a Pomeranian survive in Indian heat?
Better than the coat suggests, because that double coat insulates against heat as well as cold. Leave it intact, brush it out, and keep exercise to cooler hours. Never shave a Pomeranian.
Which dog breed is best for Indian climate?

Is a Pug suitable for India?
It is the most heat vulnerable common breed here. A severely shortened airway means the cooling system barely works. Many live happily in Indian homes, but air conditioning in summer is welfare rather than luxury, and outdoor exercise has to be limited to genuinely cool hours.
