Six ways to give a dog somewhere to go indoors, and the honest trade-off in each.

A dog toilet is any surface indoors that a dog will reliably use, and there are six in common use in India. They differ less in how well they work than in what they ask of you afterwards, which is the part nobody puts on the packaging.

We make one of these. It is the last one on the list and we have said what is wrong with it alongside everything else, because a page that finds no fault with its own product is not worth reading.

Free, and it costs you time

Suits: Ground floor homes, a garden, a flexible schedule, a dog with a reliable bladder.

Against it: Four trips a day is roughly ninety minutes on a lift and a pavement. Monsoon, a fever, a late meeting or a twelfth floor turns that into the hardest part of owning a dog. Puppies under sixteen weeks should not be on shared ground at all until their vaccination course finishes.

Disposable pee pads

Lowest to start, highest to keep

Suits: Puppies in their first weeks, recovery after an operation, travel.

Against it: Every pad is thrown away, so the cost never stops and the bin fills. They slide on tile, a bored dog shreds them, and the plastic backing traps urine against the floor when it leaks. The chemical scent is what most people notice by week three.

Artificial grass pad

Moderate once, then your weekends

Suits: Balconies with a drain, owners who genuinely will scrub weekly.

Against it: Urine sits in the backing. You are scrubbing turf in the bathroom every week, and the smell moves from the balcony into the bathroom rather than leaving. In Indian summers the plastic gets hot enough to be unpleasant underfoot.

Suits: Dogs who refuse everything else and owners for whom cost is not the constraint.

Against it: Grass dies fast in Indian heat, faster on a shaded balcony where it never dries. Delivery of live turf is limited to a few cities and it arrives soaked in monsoon.

Dog litter box

Low to moderate

Suits: Small dogs under about eight kilos, flats with very little floor space.

Against it: Most dogs do not dig or bury, so litter gets kicked across the room instead of covering anything. Larger dogs step in it and walk it through the house. Cat litter clumps on paws and is not made for this.

How to choose in about a minute

Start with the dog rather than the product. A puppy under sixteen weeks needs something indoors regardless of what you eventually settle on, because the vaccination course is not finished and shared ground is where parvo comes from. A dog over twenty kilos rules out a litter box. A dog recovering from sterilisation needs ten to fourteen days without stairs.

Then be honest about the cleaning. Artificial grass is a good product for someone who will scrub it every week, and a bad one for everybody else, because the failure mode is a smell that moves into the bathroom. If you know you will not keep that up, the choice is between throwing something away and washing something, and everything else follows from that.

Then check the floor. Marble and mosaic show a leak immediately and stain if urine sits. Anything you use on those floors needs a raised leak proof edge rather than a flat pad.

Where to put it

Put it where the dog already goes. People choose a corner that suits the furniture and then wonder why it is ignored. A dog that has been having accidents by the balcony door has already told you where it wants to go, and moving the toilet there is faster than moving the dog.

Air matters more than any product. A spot near a balcony door or a window stays fresh with no intervention, and the same setup in a closed bathroom concentrates everything. If you can only use a bathroom, leave the extractor running.

What is the best dog toilet for an Indian apartment?

It depends on the dog's size and on how much cleaning you will realistically do. Pee pads suit a puppy for a few weeks. Artificial grass works if you will scrub it weekly and most people stop. A coir tray suits dogs of any size because you replace the pad instead of washing it. A dog litter box only works for small dogs who dig.

Do dog toilets actually smell?

The material decides it. Plastic backed pads and artificial grass hold urine in a surface you then have to clean, and what you smell is the residue rather than fresh urine. Absorbent natural material neutralises at the source. Whatever you use, ventilation matters more than any spray: put it where air moves rather than in a sealed bathroom.

How much does a dog toilet cost in India?

Will my dog use an indoor toilet?

Most dogs take to a natural surface within one to three days because it smells like ground they already use. Dogs who have only ever gone outdoors take longer than puppies. The reliable method is placing it where they already have accidents rather than where it suits your furniture.

Is an indoor dog toilet hygienic?

More so than the alternative in a lot of Indian buildings, where the shared garden carries whatever every other dog in the society left. An indoor spot you control is cleaner than ground you do not, particularly for a puppy who is not fully vaccinated.

What size dog toilet do I need?

The dog should be able to turn around fully on it. Under 8kg a small pad is enough, 8 to 20kg wants medium, and over 20kg needs large. When you are between two sizes, take the larger, because a dog that overshoots the edge stops using it.
