Adopt a Dog or Cat in India
80 shelters and rescues across 18 cities, read from their own sites. Ring before you visit, because intake and adoption hours vary and most work on volunteer time.

Before you adopt
This part is written to put some people off, and that is deliberate. An animal returned after three weeks is worse off than one never adopted.
- Expect a home visit. Most shelters want to see where the dog will live, and a few will want to meet everyone in the house. It is routine and it is not personal.
- Many shelters will not place a large dog in an apartment with no outdoor access. Ask about that policy in your first message so you find out early rather than late.
- The adoption itself is often free or a small fee. The veterinary catch up is not. Budget for vaccination, deworming, sterilisation and a first health check in the first two months.
- Get your society or landlord sorted before the dog comes home. A pet clause argued after the fact is a miserable way to start.
- An adult street rescue can take weeks to settle, sometimes months. Some hide behind the sofa for a fortnight. Some flinch at brooms for a year. That is normal and it does pass.
- Puppies get taken quickly. Adult dogs wait the longest, and they are usually easier to live with because you can already see the temperament you are getting.
- Ask the hard questions before you commit. How is the dog at 2am, in a lift, around children, with other dogs, when left alone. A shelter worth adopting from will tell you the difficult parts.
- If you are unsure, offer to foster first. Almost every shelter would rather you foster for a month than adopt and return, and fostering is how a lot of adoptions quietly begin.

Questions people ask
How do I adopt a dog in India?
Contact a shelter or rescue in your city, usually by phone or through their form. Most will ask about your home, your routine and who else lives there, and many run a home check. Expect the process to take days rather than minutes, because a good rescue is trying to avoid the animal coming back.
Does adopting a dog cost money in India?
Adoption itself is usually free or a nominal fee. The veterinary catch-up is not. A street rescue often needs vaccination, deworming, sterilisation and sometimes treatment, and that is real money in the first few months even when the animal is free.
Can I adopt if I live in an apartment?
Yes, and most Indian adopters do. Some shelters are cautious about large or high energy dogs going to small flats with no outdoor access, and will say so. Being straightforward about your space gets you a better match than talking it up.
Is an Indie a good first dog?
Generally yes. Indies are adapted to Indian conditions, tend to have fewer inherited health problems than closed-studbook breeds, and are the animals most in need of homes. An adult Indie who has lived on the street may take weeks or months to settle indoors, which is worth knowing before rather than after.
What should I ask a shelter before adopting?
Ask what is known about the animal's history, what vaccinations and sterilisation have been done and when, how it behaves around children and other animals, and what support they offer if it does not work out. A shelter that answers all five honestly is one worth adopting from.
Already have the animal?
Sterilisation is the single most useful thing you can do next, and much of it is free or subsidised in Indian cities.
Low cost spay and neuterAdopting into a flat?
A dog that has lived on the street or in a shelter run has no toilet routine to bring with it, and the first fortnight in a flat is where that gets decided. An indoor coir pad gives them somewhere legitimate to go while everything else is still strange, which is easier than correcting accidents after they have started.
SniffSociety makes the coir pad. Everything else on this page is free and always will be.
