Low Cost Spay and Neuter

60 providers across 18 Indian cities, marked for whether they are free, subsidised or private. Ring first, because most run on appointment days rather than walk-ins.

Last checked 2026-08-09

Why it matters

  • Spaying removes the risk of pyometra, a uterine infection that turns up in unspayed females and usually ends in emergency surgery at the worst possible hour.
  • Veterinary guidance links spaying before the first or second season with a lower lifetime risk of mammary tumours, which are among the most common tumours in female dogs.
  • Neutering removes the risk of testicular cancer in males and reduces the prostate trouble that shows up in older dogs.
  • Roaming, marking and some male to male scrapping often ease off after neutering. Training still does most of the work on behaviour, so treat surgery as help rather than a fix.
  • Sterilisation and vaccination is the method India's Animal Birth Control Rules prescribe for managing street dog numbers, which is why municipal programmes exist and are usually free.
  • Shelters across every city on this list are full. A litter that is not born is space for a dog already waiting.

What the day actually involves

  • Most clinics ask for a fast of eight to twelve hours before surgery, with water usually allowed until closer to the time. Confirm the exact window with them, because it varies.
  • Pre anaesthetic bloodwork is often offered for older dogs and it is worth paying for. Ask whether it is included or extra.
  • Males are frequently a same day discharge. Females are kept longer and may need an overnight stay, so plan the day around it.
  • Your dog goes home in a cone or a body suit for roughly ten to fourteen days. They will hate it and you will be tempted to take it off. Licking the wound is what causes most complications.
  • Short lead walks only until the stitches are out. Keep them off stairs where you can, and keep them out of the bath.
  • Look at the incision once a day for swelling, discharge, redness or a gap. Ring the clinic the same day if anything changes rather than waiting for the follow up.
  • Metabolism slows after sterilisation, so watch the food quantity over the next few months. A quiet, off food dog for a day or two afterwards is common, and appetite usually returns by the second evening.

Questions people ask

How much does dog sterilisation cost in India?

It varies enormously. Municipal Animal Birth Control programmes sterilise community dogs at no cost to the person reporting them. Charitable clinics often work on a subsidised or pay-what-you-can basis. Private veterinary hospitals charge a wide range depending on city, size and whether it is a spay or a neuter. Where a provider publishes a price we have recorded it, and prices change.

Is spaying or neutering free in India?

For community and street animals, sterilisation under a municipal ABC programme is generally free. For an owned pet it usually is not, though several charitable trusts subsidise it heavily. This page marks which is which.

At what age should a dog be sterilised?

Commonly around six months, though vets differ and there are arguments for waiting longer in large breeds so growth plates close first. This is a conversation with your own vet rather than a fixed rule.

How long does recovery take?

Most animals are visibly themselves within two to three days and fully healed in ten to fourteen. The hard part is not the pain, it is stopping them licking the wound and keeping them quiet while they feel fine.

Does sterilisation change a dog's personality?

It reduces hormone driven behaviour such as roaming, marking and some forms of aggression between males. It does not change temperament, drive or how affectionate an animal is, and it does not make a dog lazy. Weight gain after neutering comes from energy needs dropping while the food bowl stays the same.

Reporting a community dog rather than your own?

Municipal Animal Birth Control is the lawful route, and it is free to the person reporting.

The ABC route, city by city

The ten days after the operation

Post-operative advice is restricted movement, no running, and keeping the incision out of dirt and water. That is difficult to reconcile with taking a dog down twelve floors four times a day. An indoor coir pad covers the recovery window without the stairs, the lift or the street.

SniffSociety makes the coir pad. Everything else on this page is free and always will be.
