The sum
Two numbers. How long your dog can hold on, and how long you are actually away. Most people get the second one wrong, because they count office hours rather than door to door. Nine hours at work is eleven or twelve with a Bangalore or Gurgaon commute, and the dog experiences the larger number.

What actually closes the gap
A midday walker
The best answer if you can arrange and afford it. One visit around the middle of the day halves the longest stretch, which is the number that matters rather than the daily total.
A neighbour or family member
Common in Indian buildings and worth asking, particularly in a society with other dog owners. A key with somebody on your floor solves more than most products.
An indoor toilet
Gives the dog somewhere legitimate for the hours you are not there. This is the one we make, and it is worth being clear that it solves the bladder problem and not the loneliness.

Train at the hours you are there
The training itself does not need you home all day. It needs consistency at the moments you are: first thing, after meals, after naps, last thing at night, and heavily at weekends. A dog learns the routine from those repetitions rather than from being supervised continuously.
What does not work is trying to train through an eleven hour absence. That teaches the dog that holding on eventually fails, which is precisely the opposite of the habit you are building, and it produces the accidents people then read as stubbornness.

How long can a dog hold its bladder while I'm at work?
A healthy adult manages six to eight hours comfortably. A puppy is roughly one hour per month of age plus one, so a three month old is around four hours. A senior dog is often less than an adult. If you are out longer than the dog's number, the shortfall is arithmetic rather than training.
How do I potty train a dog while working full time?
Train intensively at the times you are there, mornings, evenings and weekends, and remove the need to hold on beyond capacity during the day, with a walker, a neighbour or an indoor spot. Trying to train through a ten hour absence teaches the dog that holding on fails, which is the opposite of the lesson.
My dog pees in the house while I'm at work. Is it spite?
No. Dogs do not toilet indoors out of protest, and it is worth letting that idea go, because it changes how you respond. Either the dog could not hold it, or something happened while you were out. Coming home to tell them off does nothing except make your return something to dread.
Could it be separation anxiety?
It can be, and it looks different: accidents alongside destruction near doors and windows, drooling, howling, or an attempt to escape, usually starting within half an hour of you leaving. If that is the pattern the toilet is a symptom and the anxiety needs addressing with a vet or a behaviourist.
Is it cruel to leave a dog alone all day?
Not by itself, and it depends on what the rest of the day looks like. A dog with a proper walk before and after, something to do while you are out, and a way to relieve itself is doing fine. A dog holding on for eleven hours in an empty flat with nothing to do is not.

Will an indoor toilet undo the outdoor training?
Generally no. Dogs distinguish surfaces and places well, and most who use an indoor spot during the day carry on going outside on walks. What helps is keeping it in one defined place rather than moving it around.
