Animal Helpline Numbers

You have found an animal that needs help. Ring before you move it, and have the exact location ready, because that is the first thing they will ask.

Last checked 2026-08-09

The first few minutes

  • Ring before you travel. A rescue group can tell you in a minute whether a van is free, and where to take the animal if it is not.
  • Send a pinned location on WhatsApp. It saves more time than describing the road.
  • Keep the animal warm, covered and quiet. Move people and other dogs back, and keep the noise down.
  • An animal in pain will bite the person helping it. Approach slowly from the side and lay a thick cloth over the head before you touch anything.
  • Hold back food and water if there is bleeding, unconsciousness, or any chance surgery will be needed.
  • Lift only if the animal is in danger where it lies. Slide a flat board or stiff cardboard underneath and lift the whole body at once, keeping the spine straight.
  • If nobody can attend, ring the nearest veterinary hospital, ask whether you may bring the animal in yourself, then book an auto or cab that will take an injured animal.

  • PAWS, Plant and Animal Welfare Society, Dombivlingo

    +91 98201 61114

Its own site at pawsasia.org refused automated access, so this is the number published on its official Facebook page, along with an office near Dombivli station and a rescue centre at Murbad. Worth knowing before you call: the most recent post we could see on that page was from August 2024, so confirm the line is still answered.

    https://www.facebook.com/pawsthane

Numbers are taken from each organisation's own published page on the date above. Organisations change numbers and some rescue lines are staffed by volunteers, so if one does not answer, try the next on the list rather than assuming nobody will come. Cities missing from this page are ones where we could not verify a number from a first-party source.

Questions people ask

Who do I call for an injured street dog in India?

Ring a local animal rescue organisation rather than a general civic helpline, because they have the ambulance and the vet. This page lists organisations by city with numbers taken from their own pages. Ring before you move the animal, since moving a spinal injury badly can make it permanent.

Is there a national animal helpline number in India?

There is no single national rescue number that works everywhere. Kerala publishes 1962 as a veterinary helpline, and some other states run their own, but coverage is inconsistent and we only list a state number where we could confirm it from that state's own site. City-level organisations are more reliable.

What should I do before help arrives?

Keep the animal warm, quiet and contained if it is safe to do so. Do not give food or water to an animal that is unconscious or badly injured. Do not attempt to set a limb. Note the exact location, because that is the first thing dispatch will ask for.

Can I be held responsible if I help an injured animal?

Helping an injured animal is not an offence and Article 51A(g) of the Constitution places a duty of compassion on citizens. If you are worried about liability for a road accident you did not cause, take a photograph before moving anything.

Is your own pet the emergency?

Different problem. These are the clinics, and what to ask on the call.
