You Found a Stray Puppy: The First 24 Hours
A puppy has turned up and you have no plan. What to do in the first day, in order, for Indian conditions. Warmth first, food later, vet soon.
A puppy has appeared and you have no plan. Get it warm, work out whether the mother is nearby, hold off on food and milk until you know more, and get to a vet inside 24 hours. In that order.
Most people who find a puppy in India find it on a bad day. Monsoon has flooded a drain, a litter has been dumped near a construction site, or a mother has been hit by a car and four small animals are suddenly nobody's. You are not prepared, you have no equipment, and the internet is telling you things written for someone in Ohio. Before anything else, put the animal rescue helpline for your city on speaker, because trained hands beat good intentions in the first hour.
Here is the order that matters.
Step 1: Look for the mother before you pick anything up
This is the step people skip and regret. A puppy sitting alone is not necessarily abandoned. Street mothers move litters one at a time, they leave them for long stretches while they find food, and they come back.
Stand back and watch for twenty minutes if the puppy is not in immediate danger. If there are other puppies nearby, if the one you found looks clean and round-bellied, and if it is not crying continuously, a mother is very likely close.
A puppy with its mother has better odds than a puppy with you. She has milk you cannot replicate, immunity you cannot buy, and she has kept it alive this far.
Pick it up anyway if it is in traffic, in water, in direct sun, being attacked, or visibly injured. Those override everything above.

Step 2: Warmth comes before food
A cold puppy cannot digest. Feeding a chilled animal is how people accidentally kill one they were trying to save, because the gut shuts down and whatever goes in stays there.
Feel the ears and the pads. If they are cool, the puppy is cold, even in Indian heat, and especially after rain.
Wrap it in dry cloth and hold it against your body, or use a bottle of warm water wrapped in a towel. Warm, not hot. You are aiming for the temperature of your own skin, not a hot water bag pressed against a small animal that cannot move away from it.
Give this half an hour before you think about food.
Step 3: Do not give cow's milk
This is the most common mistake in India and it causes real harm. Cow and buffalo milk gives puppies diarrhoea, and a small puppy with diarrhoea dehydrates fast enough to die of it.
What to use instead, in order of preference:
- Puppy milk replacer from a pet shop or a vet, mixed as the pack says
- If nothing is open, warm water with a pinch of sugar and salt to hold hydration until morning
- Nothing at all is better than cow's milk
If the puppy has teeth and can lap, soaked kibble or plain boiled chicken works. If it cannot lap, it needs a syringe and a technique you should not learn from a paragraph. Ring a vet or a rescue.
Step 4: Check for the things that need a vet tonight
Most puppies can wait until morning. These cannot:
- Bloody diarrhoea, or vomiting that will not stop
- Gums that are white or grey rather than pink
- Cold and unresponsive after half an hour of warming
- Visible injury, a wound with maggots, or a limb that hangs wrong
- Laboured breathing
Bloody diarrhoea in an unvaccinated puppy raises parvovirus, which spreads and which needs isolation as well as treatment. Ring ahead and say so, because the clinic will want to manage where you wait.

Step 5: The vet visit, within 24 hours
Even a healthy looking puppy needs one. Ask for four things:
- A weight and a rough age. Everything else is dosed from this.
- A check for parvo and distemper risk, based on what the puppy has been exposed to.

Expect this to cost something even at a charitable clinic. Adoption is free. Veterinary catch-up is not, and the first month is the expensive one.
Step 6: Decide honestly what happens next
You have three options and only one of them is a decision you can make on the day.
Keep it. Work out first whether your building allows dogs, whether your household agrees, and whether you can commit for the next twelve to fifteen years. Read the before you adopt section before you decide, because it is written to put people off.
Foster it until a home is found. The most useful thing most people can do. Rescues are permanently short of foster homes, and a puppy in a house grows up better socialised than one in a shelter.
Hand it to a rescue. Ring first. Shelters in Indian cities run at capacity and one that says no is being honest rather than unkind. Our shelter directory lists organisations across 18 cities.
Putting it back where you found it is also an option, and for a healthy puppy with a mother nearby it is often the right one.
What about the rest of the litter
If there are others, they need the same. It is tempting to take the weakest and leave the rest, but a litter that has lost its mother will not survive without intervention, and the strongest one today is the weakest one in a week.

Frequently asked questions
Can I give a stray puppy cow's milk?
No. Cow and buffalo milk causes diarrhoea in puppies, and dehydration from diarrhoea kills small puppies quickly. Use puppy milk replacer from a pet shop, or nothing at all until you can get some.
How do I know how old a stray puppy is?
Eyes open at around two weeks, they start walking properly at three to four weeks, and milk teeth come through at three to six weeks. A vet can estimate from teeth more accurately than you can from size, since street puppies are often small for their age.
Should I bathe a stray puppy straight away?
Not on day one. A bath drops body temperature, which is the thing you are trying to protect. Wipe visible dirt with a damp cloth, dry thoroughly, and leave the bath until the puppy is warm, fed and checked.
Is it legal to pick up a street puppy in India?
Yes. Feeding and caring for community animals is recognised, and Article 51A(g) of the Constitution places a duty of compassion on citizens. What if my building will not allow it?

Do I need to worry about rabies?
Get any bite or scratch that breaks skin looked at the same day, and tell the doctor it was an unvaccinated animal. Post exposure treatment is time sensitive and widely available in India. This is not a reason to avoid helping, it is a reason to be sensible while you do.
