Indie or Pedigree in India? The Actual Arithmetic
What an Indie and a pedigree dog really cost across a lifetime in India, including the heat, the vet bills and the parts nobody puts in the comparison.
Every page that ranks for this question quotes a price for the pedigree and nothing for the Indie, then calls it a comparison. The purchase price is the smallest number in the whole calculation, and it is the only one most articles mention.
I have a Maltese. Pixie came to us before I had thought about any of this, and she is not going anywhere. So this is not a piece written by someone with an Indie telling you to get an Indie. It is the arithmetic I wish I had seen first.
The number everyone leads with is the one that matters least
A pedigree puppy in an Indian city costs money. An Indie costs nothing. Every comparison stops there, as though the transaction is the expense.
It is not. A dog costs you money every month for twelve to fifteen years. Set the purchase against that and it becomes a rounding error, whichever way it falls. What actually separates the two is what happens across those years.

Where the real difference sits: the climate
This is the part that never makes the comparison and it is the biggest single factor in India.
An Indie evolved here. Short single coat, normal muzzle, medium build, thousands of years of selection by Indian summers. Nothing about the climate is a problem to solve.
A double coated or flat faced breed is carrying equipment designed for somewhere else. A Husky in Chennai is wearing a coat built for minus forty. A Pug anywhere on the Indian plains has an airway that cannot cool efficiently in heat that reaches forty five.
That has costs. Air conditioning through summer is a real electricity bill. Walks move to dawn and dusk, which changes your life more than you expect. And heat related emergencies are expensive and frightening. Our breed climate checker scores this properly by breed and by where you live.
Health across a lifetime
Indies come from an open gene pool. No closed studbook, no selection for extremes, no small founding population. The mechanism that produces inherited disease in pedigree breeds is largely absent.
I want to be careful here, because this claim gets overstated. I could not find Indian data comparing disease incidence in Indies against pedigree dogs living in the same conditions. What I can say is that the mechanism is well understood and the expectation is reasonable, not that it has been measured here.
What is not in dispute is that some pedigree breeds carry known, breed specific problems: hip dysplasia in large breeds, spinal disease in Dachshunds, breathing and eye problems in flat faced breeds, heart conditions in several lines. Those are not certainties for any individual dog. They are risks you are buying, and some of them cost tens of thousands to manage.
Indies get everything environmental in full measure: tick fever, parvo if unvaccinated, injuries. Adaptation to climate is not immunity to disease.
The costs that are identical
Worth saying plainly, because the internet implies otherwise. Food scales with body weight, not with pedigree. Vaccination, deworming and sterilisation cost the same. Boarding costs the same. A road accident costs the same. When the accident happens to a dog nobody owns, the rescue numbers for injured animals are where to start.

Where Indies are genuinely harder
An adult street rescue is not a blank slate. They may have learned that hands are dangerous, that other dogs are competition, or that food disappears if you do not eat it immediately. Some settle in a fortnight. Some take months.
You also cannot predict adult size from a street puppy with much confidence, and you know nothing about the parents.
If you need a known quantity, a predictable adult size and a temperament profile, a pedigree from a genuinely responsible source gives you that and an Indie does not. That is a real reason and it is not a shameful one.
Where pedigrees are genuinely harder
Finding a responsible source in India is difficult. Much of the trade operates in conditions nobody would defend, and the animal in the shop window arrived from somewhere. If you cannot see the mother, in the place the puppy was raised, that is worth taking seriously.
We do not list breeders on this site and we do not publish prices for animals. That is a deliberate choice, and the demand data would support doing otherwise.
So what should you do
If you want a dog, are honest about your flat and your routine, and have no strong requirement for a known adult size, an Indie is the easier animal to keep well in India and the one that needs the home.
If you have a specific requirement, get the breed that fits, then read the climate scoring and plan for it properly rather than discovering it in May.
Either way, the animal will cost you far more in year seven than it did on day one, and that is the number worth thinking about before you decide.

Are Indie dogs healthier than pedigree dogs?

Do Indie dogs cost less to keep than pedigree dogs?
Food, vaccination, deworming and sterilisation cost the same for a dog of the same weight. Where Indies save money is climate related: no air conditioning requirement, fewer heat emergencies, and no breed specific conditions such as brachycephalic airway surgery. Are Indies good apartment dogs?
Generally yes. They are medium sized, they do not need extreme exercise, and they cope with Indian heat better than any imported breed. An adult street rescue may take weeks or months to settle indoors, which is the honest caveat.
Can I adopt an Indie puppy rather than an adult?
Yes, and shelters across India have them constantly. A puppy adapts to indoor life faster than an adult street dog. You will not know its adult size with any accuracy, which matters if your building has a size rule.
