Deworming Schedule Calculator

How often to deworm a dog or cat in India, by age and how much time they spend outside. Your vet decides the drug and the dose. This gives you the rhythm.

How much time outdoors?

Indian conditions change this answer. Year round warmth, standing water through the monsoon and free ranging animals in shared spaces all mean higher reinfection pressure than the annual or twice yearly advice you will read on foreign sites.

Why Indian intervals are shorter

Worm eggs survive in warm damp soil. In most of India there is no winter hard enough to break that cycle, so the ground your dog walks on stays viable year round. Add a monsoon that leaves standing water on every society lawn and the exposure is close to constant.

Quarterly is the usual default an Indian vet will give you for an adult dog that walks daily. That is roughly double the frequency recommended in temperate countries, and the reason is climate rather than caution.

The puppy and kitten schedule is not negotiable

Roundworm passes from the mother, so a puppy or kitten is often born already carrying a burden. That is why the schedule starts at two weeks old and repeats every two weeks until twelve weeks, then monthly until six months.

A heavy worm burden in a young animal is not a minor problem. It shows up as a swollen belly on a thin body, poor growth, and a dull coat, and in bad cases it kills. If you have just adopted a street puppy, assume worms and speak to a vet in the first week.

Tapeworm is usually a flea problem

If you keep seeing rice grain segments near the tail, deworming alone will not fix it. Dogs and cats get the common tapeworm by swallowing an infected flea while grooming, so unless the fleas go, the tapeworm comes back on schedule.

Treat both at once. Ask your vet to look at the whole picture rather than repeating a dewormer that keeps working and keeps being undone.

What goes wrong

  • Deworming once and assuming it is done. It is a schedule, not a cure.
  • Guessing the dose from the packet. Dose is by weight, and an underdose selects for resistance.
  • Treating one animal in a multi pet home. They reinfect each other within days.
  • Skipping it for an indoor cat. Worms arrive on shoes, on other pets, and through fleas.
  • Forgetting. This is the real failure mode. Set a recurring calendar reminder the day you start.

When to stop guessing and ring a vet

Deworming is routine, but some signs mean something else is going on and a schedule will not fix it.

  • Visible worms in vomit, or a lot of them in stool
  • A swollen belly on an otherwise thin puppy or kitten
  • Blood or mucus in stool, or diarrhoea lasting more than a day
  • Weight loss despite a normal appetite
  • Dragging the bottom along the floor repeatedly

Questions people ask

How often should I deworm my dog in India?

Every three months for a typical adult dog that walks daily. Every two months if the dog free roams or lives alongside animals that do. Every four months for a genuinely indoor dog. Puppies run every two weeks from two weeks to twelve weeks, then monthly to six months.

How often should I deworm an indoor cat?

Roughly every four months. Lower exposure than a dog that walks, but not zero, because worm eggs come in on shoes and the common tapeworm arrives through fleas.

Can I deworm a pregnant dog or cat?

Some dewormers are safe in pregnancy and some are not, and treating the mother reduces what passes to the litter. This is a decision for your vet, not a packet.

Do I need a vet prescription to deworm?

Common dewormers are widely sold in India without one. The dose still depends on weight, and getting it wrong either fails to work or selects for resistance, so confirm the dose even if you buy it yourself.

My dog keeps getting tapeworm. Why?

Almost always fleas. Dogs and cats get the common tapeworm by swallowing an infected flea while grooming. Until the fleas are dealt with, the tapeworm returns however often you deworm.

These tools give averages. Averages are a starting point and not a verdict on your dog. Anything here that touches health is written to help you decide whether something is worth a vet's time, never to tell you what is wrong.

Where the worms come from

Most reinfection happens through contact with contaminated ground outdoors, which is why deworming has to repeat rather than being a single treatment. Cutting the number of trips onto shared ground cuts the exposure, and an indoor coir pad is the practical way to do that with a young puppy.

SniffSociety makes the coir pad. Everything else on this page is free and always will be.
