Delhi to Rishikesh With a Dog
Around 6 hours of driving each way, roughly 240km by road. Comfortable to do in a day with breaks.
Delhi to Rishikesh and Rishikesh to Delhi are one journey, so everything here applies whichever way you are pointing.
What to expect on the road
About 6 hours from Delhi on decent highway. Straightforward drive with no significant ghat sections until beyond Rishikesh.
Railhead if you would rather not drive: Haridwar, roughly 45 minutes away, well connected to Delhi.
Leaving Delhi
Rishikesh lies north east of Delhi, roughly 240km by road. Leaving Delhi is the first hour of any trip and the worst. Aim to clear the city before 6am or after 10pm, because the ring roads and the NH exits are where a seven hour drive becomes nine. In winter, fog on the northern highways delays departures more reliably than traffic does.
Of the 57 destinations we cover, Rishikesh is the 4th closest to Delhi. That makes it one of the easiest trips you can take from here.
Closer from Delhi, if this is further than you wanted

Rishikesh in one paragraph
The Ganga runs fast and cold here, so it is not a safe swimming spot for dogs. Large parts of Rishikesh are vegetarian and alcohol free by rule, which does not affect dogs but does shape where you eat. Monkeys are abundant and can be aggressive, which is a genuine risk for smaller dogs.

Veterinary access at the far end
Veterinary care in Rishikesh and better facilities in Dehradun, about an hour away.
Worth ten minutes in Delhi rather than an hour of panic at the other end. Emergency vets by city.
Timing it from Delhi
Delhi is the hardest climate in this list for a dog. Summer runs past 45C from May, and heatstroke cases climb through it. Winter smog is genuinely difficult for flat faced breeds and older dogs with any respiratory weakness.
Diwali is the busiest week of the year for Delhi emergency clinics, between firework injuries and dogs who have bolted. May and June are the heat months.
Set that against Rishikesh, where the advice is to go september to november, february to april and avoid May and June. The overlap between those two windows is your actual travel season, and it is usually narrower than either one suggests on its own.
Doing this journey with your dog
At around 6 hours this is a comfortable single day out of Delhi. Age changes the plan more than distance does. A senior dog needs the journey split rather than shortened, since stiffness arrives the morning after rather than during. A flat faced breed needs the cool hours whatever the distance, because panting is the entire cooling system and a warm car defeats it. Neither is a reason to skip a 6 hour trip.
