Delhi to Chandigarh With a Dog

Around 5 hours of driving each way, roughly 300km by road. Comfortable to do in a day with breaks.

Written for the journey in both directions. Chandigarh back to Delhi is the same road with the light behind you.

The drive

About 5 hours from Delhi on a good expressway, one of the easiest long drives in north India with a dog. It is also the standard overnight break for anyone driving on to Manali, Shimla or Dharamshala.

Railhead if you would rather not drive: Chandigarh Junction, well connected to Delhi.

Leaving Delhi

Chandigarh lies due north of Delhi, roughly 300km by road. Leaving Delhi is the first hour of any trip and the worst. Aim to clear the city before 6am or after 10pm, because the ring roads and the NH exits are where a seven hour drive becomes nine. In winter, fog on the northern highways delays departures more reliably than traffic does.

Of the 57 destinations we cover, Chandigarh is the 3rd closest to Delhi. That makes it one of the easiest trips you can take from here.

Closer from Delhi, if this is further than you wanted

Chandigarh in one paragraph

Unusually walkable and green for an Indian city, with wide pavements and large parks, which makes it genuinely comfortable with a dog. A common overnight stop en route to Himachal.

The full Chandigarh guide carries the ground level detail: where dogs go, where they do not, and what to watch for.

Veterinary access at the far end

Among the best on this list. Multiple well equipped private clinics, and the government veterinary hospital in Sector 38.

Know where the nearest twenty four hour option is even if the local one looks fine, since local ones close. Emergency vets by city.

Timing it from Delhi

Delhi is the hardest climate in this list for a dog. Summer runs past 45C from May, and heatstroke cases climb through it. Winter smog is genuinely difficult for flat faced breeds and older dogs with any respiratory weakness.

Diwali is the busiest week of the year for Delhi emergency clinics, between firework injuries and dogs who have bolted. May and June are the heat months.

Set that against Chandigarh, where the advice is to go october to march and avoid May and June. The overlap between those two windows is your actual travel season, and it is usually narrower than either one suggests on its own.

Doing this journey with your dog

At around 5 hours this is a comfortable single day out of Delhi. Secure the dog properly. A crate strapped down or a harness clipped to a seat belt point, never loose on a lap or hanging out of a window. In a sudden brake an unrestrained dog becomes a projectile, and over 5 hours the odds of one sudden brake on an Indian highway are close to certain. It also stops them climbing into the footwell when they get bored.
