Where to adopt in Thane

  • Mypalclub FoundationrescueRescue

Their site describes treating stray animals on the street where they are, across Thane, plus rescue and rehabilitation for special needs animals and care for older strays. Adoption is not described on the site, so ask.

  • Thane Community for the Protection and Care of AnimalsshelterAdoptionRescueSterilisation

The organisation states it is a non profit providing veterinary care through a hospital and mobile clinics across Thane district, and that it has been doing so for more than 20 years. Its work page says over 1,50,000 animals have been treated, that its facilities hold about a hundred animals across separate wards with an operation theatre, digital X ray and an ICU, and that homes have been found for hundreds of them. Three ambulances cover the district, so ring the helpline rather than travelling in.

  • PAWS Asia, Plants and Animals Welfare SocietyrescueAdoptionRescue

Their site describes a rescue centre at Murbad on the border of the Thane, Raigad and Pune districts, running since 2009 across 1.25 acres with 14 dog wards. The organisation states it prioritises animals that are injured, blind, disabled or unable to survive on their own, and that healthy community animals usually do better where they already live. The centre is about 45 km from Dombivli, so confirm before travelling.

  • Khushiyaan Foundation, Home for PawsshelterAdoptionRescue

Home for Paws is the foundation's Thane shelter project, and their page says the premises hold about 40 abandoned and ill dogs who are treated and then put up for adoption. The organisation states the project runs every day. Khushiyaan runs many other social projects, so say you are calling about Home for Paws.

  • Dombivli Animal Welfare AssociationrescueAdoptionRescueSterilisation

The association's own page states it is a registered NGO established in 2014 by Nikkita Ghag, working for stray animals and wildlife, and that it promotes adoption and neutering of stray animals. This is a small volunteer run page rather than a walk in shelter, and Facebook is the only official presence we could find. Message the page rather than expecting an address.

What the list shows for Thane

4 of 5 state that they rehome animals. 5 also do rescue work, which means they are the number to ring about an animal on the street rather than only about adopting one. 2 run sterilisation alongside it. They are a mix of rescue, shelter, and those are genuinely different operations rather than different words for the same thing.

Your first fortnight in Thane

The first two weeks decide most of how this goes. Three arrangements matter, and everything else can wait until you know the animal.

  • A vet in the first week, before anything is wrong. We list 6 after hours options in Thane, of which 2 state round the clock cover. The point of going early is that you meet the staff and they meet the animal, which is what you want established before a bad night.
  • Sterilisation, if it has not already been done. We list 5 low cost or subsidised providers in Thane, and several run free programmes for street animals that will also take an owned pet.
  • An enzymatic cleaner rather than phenyl. Phenyl smells clean to you and smells like a marked spot to the dog, which is why the same corner keeps happening. It matters more with a rescue than with a puppy, because a dog that has lived outdoors has no reason to think your floor is different from any other ground.

A street dog arrives with habits rather than without them. They already know not to go where they sleep, and the job is translating that into a flat rather than starting from zero.

What adopting actually involves, the questions worth asking, and every city we cover.
