Pune to Kaziranga With a Dog

Roughly 2810km by road, which is around 44 hours of driving. Almost nobody does this by car with a dog. Train or plane is the sensible route.

Written for the journey in both directions. Kaziranga back to Pune is the same road with the light behind you.

Do not drive this one

Roughly 2810km. Two days out, two days back, and a dog that spends more of the holiday in a car than out of it. For Kaziranga the railhead is Furkating or Jorhat, then a road transfer of one to two hours.

Leaving Pune

Kaziranga lies north east of Pune, roughly 2810km by road. Pune exits cleanly in most directions, which is why so much of Maharashtra is a comfortable weekend from here. The Expressway toward Mumbai is the exception at weekends.

Where to break this journey

Driving it is only sensible as a multi day trip, and these are the natural places to end each day.

  • Varanasi , heritage in Uttar Pradesh, around 55% of the way
  • Darjeeling , hill in West Bengal, around 80% of the way
  • Gangtok , hill in Sikkim, around 82% of the way

Of the 57 destinations we cover, Kaziranga is the 57th closest to Pune.

Closer from Pune, if this is further than you wanted

Kaziranga in one paragraph

Pets are not permitted inside the national park under any circumstances, which is true of Indian national parks generally. If you travel here with a dog, someone stays outside the park with them.

The full Kaziranga guide explains what the place is actually like with a dog rather than in a brochure.

Veterinary access at the far end

Basic. Jorhat, about two hours away, has better options. Bring your own supplies.

Check it against your own vet in Pune too, because a call from someone who knows the dog's history helps a stranger treat it. Emergency vets by city.

Timing it from Pune

Milder than Mumbai and drier, with a real summer in April and May. Generally an easier city for a dog than most on this list.

Summer heat, then monsoon damp.

Set that against Kaziranga, where the advice is to go november to april and avoid May to October. The overlap between those two windows is your actual travel season, and it is usually narrower than either one suggests on its own.

Doing this journey with your dog

At around 44 hours of driving this is two days each way, which is the argument for the train. Feed light before you leave rather than not at all. A small meal three hours ahead settles most dogs better than an empty stomach, which brings its own nausea. Carry the food they already eat, since a strange brand on the road is how a holiday turns into a clean up. Roughly 44 hours in the car is long enough that what went in that morning matters.

Questions people ask

How far is Kaziranga from Pune?

Roughly 2810km by road, north east of Pune, which is around 44 hours of driving. At that distance almost nobody drives it with a dog, and the figure is an estimate rather than a looked-up number.

Should I fly or take the train from Pune to Kaziranga?

Take the train if the schedule allows it. The one real advantage of flying is time, and time matters less than the dog arriving in a usable state. Long distance trains also let you get them out and moving during halts, which a flight cannot.

Can I drive from Pune to Kaziranga with a dog if I want to?

You can, over two or three days. Varanasi, Darjeeling, Gangtok sit broadly along the corridor and make sensible overnight stops.

What is the best time to visit Kaziranga with a dog?

November to April. Avoid May to October, because park closed during monsoon flooding.

Do I need to book pet friendly stays in Kaziranga ahead?

Yes, and confirm by phone rather than trusting a listing. Properties marked pet friendly frequently turn out to mean small dogs only, or specific rooms, or an undisclosed fee. Get the size limit in writing.

What should I pack for Pune to Kaziranga?

Water and a collapsible bowl, their own food rather than a new one, the physical vaccination card, any medication, a spare lead, poo bags and an old towel. The vaccination card is the item people leave behind and then need.

Times shown are calculated, using terrain and distance to estimate an effective speed. Verified against 56 known routes. Traffic, roadworks and one bad ghat section can each add an hour.
