Lucknow to Kaziranga With a Dog

Roughly 1590km by road, which is around 25 hours of driving. Almost nobody does this by car with a dog. Train or plane is the sensible route.

Kaziranga to Lucknow needs no separate page. Same distance, same stops, a dog with less patience left.

Do not drive this one

At 1590km the car stops making sense. You would be driving through two nights or paying for two hotels in each direction. Railhead for Kaziranga: Furkating or Jorhat, then a road transfer of one to two hours.

Leaving Lucknow

Kaziranga lies east of Lucknow, roughly 1590km by road. Lucknow has good expressway access in two directions and ordinary highways everywhere else. The Agra and Purvanchal expressways are genuinely quick, so a route that uses one is worth a detour to reach. Winter fog is the seasonal constraint, and from December it can hold departures until nine or ten.

Where to break this journey

The only humane way to drive this is in stages, and these are the stages.

  • Darjeeling , hill in West Bengal, around 59% of the way
  • Gangtok , hill in Sikkim, around 62% of the way
  • Varanasi , heritage in Uttar Pradesh, around 21% of the way

Closer from Lucknow, if this is further than you wanted

Kaziranga in one paragraph

Pets are not permitted inside the national park under any circumstances, which is true of Indian national parks generally. If you travel here with a dog, someone stays outside the park with them.

The full Kaziranga guide sets out the walkable ground, the places that turn dogs away and what the weather does to it.

Veterinary access at the far end

Basic. Jorhat, about two hours away, has better options. Bring your own supplies.

Do this at the same time you book the room, not on the road out of Lucknow. Emergency vets by city.

Timing it from Lucknow

Hot summers past 44C and cold, foggy winters. Winter fog makes early morning travel genuinely slow and unsafe.

Summer heat, winter fog, and Diwali.

Set that against Kaziranga, where the advice is to go november to april and avoid May to October. The overlap between those two windows is your actual travel season, and it is usually narrower than either one suggests on its own.

Doing this journey with your dog

At around 25 hours of driving this is two days each way, which is the argument for the train. The heat window decides the timetable. Leave before dawn and you buy four cool hours before the sun becomes a factor, which on a 25 hour run is most of the hard part done. Driving through the middle of an Indian afternoon with a dog in the back is the single most common way this goes wrong, air conditioning or not.

Questions people ask

How far is Kaziranga from Lucknow?

Roughly 1590km by road, east of Lucknow, which is around 25 hours of driving. At that distance almost nobody drives it with a dog, and the figure is an estimate rather than a looked-up number.

Should I fly or take the train from Lucknow to Kaziranga?

The train wins on almost every measure except duration. No weight limit, you stay with the dog throughout, and you control the temperature and the water. Flying out of Lucknow means handing them over at a counter and getting them back at the far end.

Can I drive from Lucknow to Kaziranga with a dog if I want to?

You can, over two or three days. Darjeeling, Gangtok, Varanasi sit broadly along the corridor and make sensible overnight stops.

What is the best time to visit Kaziranga with a dog?

November to April. Avoid May to October, because park closed during monsoon flooding.

Do I need to book pet friendly stays in Kaziranga ahead?

Yes, and confirm by phone rather than trusting a listing. Properties marked pet friendly frequently turn out to mean small dogs only, or specific rooms, or an undisclosed fee. Get the size limit in writing.

What should I pack for Lucknow to Kaziranga?

Water and a collapsible bowl, their own food rather than a new one, the physical vaccination card, any medication, a spare lead, poo bags and an old towel. The vaccination card is the item people leave behind and then need.

Distances are straight line figures adjusted for how Indian roads actually run, which adds roughly a third and more in hills. Times follow from that. Both are approximations.
