Gurgaon to Auli With a Dog

Around 11 hours of driving, roughly 490km. That is a long day and most people split it over two.

Written to be read in either direction. Coming back from Auli to Gurgaon is the same road and usually the harder half.

The route in numbers

Roughly 490km and about 11 hours, traffic depending. About 8 hours from Dehradun and 10 to 12 from Delhi, and this is a hard drive rather than a long one. Continuous mountain road along the Alaknanda with landslide zones, and it should be split over two days with a night at Rudraprayag or Karnaprayag. Do not attempt the last stretch after dark.

Railhead if you would rather not drive: Rishikesh or Haridwar, then roughly 250 km and 9 hours by road. There is no shortcut.

Leaving Gurgaon

Auli lies north east of Gurgaon, roughly 490km by road. Leaving Gurgaon is really a question of which way you cross the expressway. Southbound on NH48 is clear early and solid from about 8am once Manesar traffic builds, and anything through Delhi is worse than going around it. Aim to be past Kherki Daula before seven.

Where to break this journey

Pick one as a halfway point. The dog gets a walk and you get out of the driving position.

  • Jim Corbett , wildlife in Uttarakhand, around 64% of the way
  • Rishikesh , riverside in Uttarakhand, around 65% of the way
  • Lansdowne , hill in Uttarakhand, around 66% of the way

Closer from Gurgaon, if this is further than you wanted

Auli in one paragraph

High altitude, so ascend gradually and watch for laboured breathing or lethargy. Cold suits thick-coated breeds, though snow and road grit crack paw pads.

The full Auli guide covers the terrain underfoot, the access rules and the hazards nobody mentions until you arrive.

Veterinary access at the far end

Effectively none at Auli. Joshimath has minimal facilities and Srinagar or Rishikesh is many hours down a difficult road. This is the most isolated destination on this list, so travel prepared and conservatively.

Do this at the same time you book the room, not on the road out of Gurgaon. Emergency vets by city.

Timing it from Gurgaon

Gurgaon shares Delhi's extremes: over 45C in May and June, and difficult winter air. The high rise stock also means many dogs get less ground level exercise than their breed needs, which shows up as weight and joint problems.

Diwali is the peak week for emergencies. Summer heat is the other.

Set that against Auli, where the advice is to go march to june, september to november and avoid peak winter unless prepared for snow. The overlap between those two windows is your actual travel season, and it is usually narrower than either one suggests on its own.

Doing this journey with your dog

At around 11 hours this is a long day out of Gurgaon, and most people split it. Take a photograph of the dog on your phone the morning you leave. It sounds morbid and it takes ten seconds, and if a lead slips at a fuel stop four hours from home it is the difference between describing a brown dog and showing one. Add your number to the collar tag before a 11 hour trip rather than after it.

Our breed climate checker scores how your breed copes with the conditions at Auli, and the travel hub has the other 56 destinations if this one turns out to be the wrong fit.
