Gurgaon to Rishikesh With a Dog

Around 7 hours of driving each way, roughly 280km by road. Comfortable to do in a day with breaks.

Both directions on one page. Plan the return the same way you planned the drive to Rishikesh.

What you are driving

Roughly 280km and about 7 hours, traffic depending. About 6 hours from Delhi on decent highway. Straightforward drive with no significant ghat sections until beyond Rishikesh.

Railhead if you would rather not drive: Haridwar, roughly 45 minutes away, well connected to Delhi.

Leaving Gurgaon

Rishikesh lies north east of Gurgaon, roughly 280km by road. Leaving Gurgaon is really a question of which way you cross the expressway. Southbound on NH48 is clear early and solid from about 8am once Manesar traffic builds, and anything through Delhi is worse than going around it. Aim to be past Kherki Daula before seven.

Of the 57 destinations we cover, Rishikesh is the 8th closest to Gurgaon.

Closer from Gurgaon, if this is further than you wanted

Rishikesh in one paragraph

The Ganga runs fast and cold here, so it is not a safe swimming spot for dogs. Large parts of Rishikesh are vegetarian and alcohol free by rule, which does not affect dogs but does shape where you eat. Monkeys are abundant and can be aggressive, which is a genuine risk for smaller dogs.

The full Rishikesh guide covers the terrain underfoot, the access rules and the hazards nobody mentions until you arrive.

Veterinary access at the far end

Veterinary care in Rishikesh and better facilities in Dehradun, about an hour away.

Do this at the same time you book the room, not on the road out of Gurgaon. Emergency vets by city.

Timing it from Gurgaon

Gurgaon shares Delhi's extremes: over 45C in May and June, and difficult winter air. The high rise stock also means many dogs get less ground level exercise than their breed needs, which shows up as weight and joint problems.

Diwali is the peak week for emergencies. Summer heat is the other.

Set that against Rishikesh, where the advice is to go september to november, february to april and avoid May and June. The overlap between those two windows is your actual travel season, and it is usually narrower than either one suggests on its own.

Doing this journey with your dog

At around 7 hours this is a comfortable single day out of Gurgaon. Take a photograph of the dog on your phone the morning you leave. It sounds morbid and it takes ten seconds, and if a lead slips at a fuel stop four hours from home it is the difference between describing a brown dog and showing one. Add your number to the collar tag before a 7 hour trip rather than after it.

Our breed climate checker scores how your breed copes with the conditions at Rishikesh, and the travel hub has the other 56 destinations if this one turns out to be the wrong fit.

Questions people ask

How far is Rishikesh from Gurgaon?

Roughly 280km by road, north east of Gurgaon, which is about 7 hours of driving. That is an estimate rather than a looked-up figure, and the real time depends on how long it takes to clear Gurgaon and on the last stretch.

Can I do Gurgaon to Rishikesh in a day with a dog?

Yes, if the return is planned as carefully as the outbound. Coming back into Gurgaon tired is where day trips go wrong.

Where should I stop between Gurgaon and Rishikesh?

Nothing on our list sits neatly on this corridor, so plan stops around fuel and food rather than destinations. Every two hours, water each time.

What is the best time to visit Rishikesh with a dog?

September to November, February to April. Avoid May and June, because extreme heat.

Do I need to book pet friendly stays in Rishikesh ahead?

Yes, and confirm by phone rather than trusting a listing. Properties marked pet friendly frequently turn out to mean small dogs only, or specific rooms, or an undisclosed fee. Get the size limit in writing.

What should I pack for Gurgaon to Rishikesh?

Water and a collapsible bowl, their own food rather than a new one, the physical vaccination card, any medication, a spare lead, poo bags and an old towel. The vaccination card is the item people leave behind and then need.

Distances are straight line figures adjusted for how Indian roads actually run, which adds roughly a third and more in hills. Times follow from that. Both are approximations.
