Sterilisation Cost Estimator

What a spay or neuter costs at a private clinic in India, and where in your city it may cost nothing at all.

At a private clinic, typically

₹4000 to ₹12000

A spay costs more than a neuter everywhere, because it is abdominal surgery rather than an external procedure. Larger dogs cost more, mostly on anaesthetic.

We have not verified a free or subsidised provider in Ahmedabad. That does not mean none exists. Ask your municipal corporation about its Animal Birth Control programme, and ask a local rescue who they use.

Ranges are indicative for private clinics and vary by city, clinic and whether pre-anaesthetic bloodwork is included. Ask what the quote covers: some include medication and a follow up, some do not. Community and street animals are sterilised free under municipal Animal Birth Control programmes.

Reporting a community dog instead?

That is free to you and goes through the municipal ABC programme rather than a clinic. The lawful route, city by city.

Every page answering this question gives a national range and stops. A range is not useful without a route to somewhere that will actually do it, which is why this names the free and subsidised providers in your city alongside the private clinic figure.

Why a spay costs more than a neuter

A spay is abdominal surgery. The surgeon opens the abdomen, removes the ovaries and usually the uterus, and closes in layers. A neuter on a male is an external procedure through a much smaller incision. Longer anaesthetic and longer recovery explain most of the price gap.

Size matters for the same reason. A 35kg dog needs more anaesthetic and more monitoring than a 6kg one, which is where the difference between a small and a large dog quote comes from.

Ask what the quote includes

Quotes in India are rarely comparable as given. Some include pre-anaesthetic bloodwork, post operative medication, a cone and a follow up visit. Some include the surgery and nothing else.

Ask for the total including medication and the follow up, and ask whether bloodwork is extra. A cheaper headline number with three additions can land above a more expensive all-inclusive one.

Free is genuinely available, and not only for street animals

Community and street animals are sterilised free under municipal Animal Birth Control programmes, and that is the lawful route for a stray dog concern as well as a kindness.

For owned pets, several charitable trusts across Indian cities subsidise heavily or work on what you can pay. Our directory marks which providers publish that, and the answer in most metros is that at least one exists.

What people get wrong

  • Comparing quotes without asking what each covers.
  • Assuming free options are only for street animals. Many charitable clinics take owned pets too.
  • Delaying because of cost while the animal is entire, which risks pyometra in females. That emergency costs several times a planned spay.
  • Not reducing food after the operation. Energy needs drop and the portion usually does not, which is where post neutering weight gain comes from.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to sterilise a dog in India?

At a private clinic, roughly 4,000 to 12,000 rupees for a female and 2,500 to 8,000 for a male, adjusted for size. Charitable clinics in most Indian cities do it for far less or free, and community animals are sterilised at no cost under municipal Animal Birth Control programmes.

Why is spaying more expensive than neutering?

A spay is abdominal surgery with a longer anaesthetic and a longer recovery. A neuter on a male is external and much quicker. The price difference reflects theatre time and anaesthetic rather than any difference in importance.

Is there free dog sterilisation in India?

Yes. Municipal Animal Birth Control programmes sterilise community and street dogs free. Several charitable trusts also subsidise sterilisation for owned pets. The tool above lists the ones we could verify in each city.

How much does it cost to sterilise a cat in India?

Less than a dog. Roughly 2,500 to 7,000 rupees for a female and 1,500 to 4,000 for a male at a private clinic, with charitable options well below that.

What age should sterilisation happen?

Commonly around six months, though vets differ and there is an argument for waiting longer in large breed dogs so growth plates close first. Discuss it with your own vet rather than following a fixed rule.

These tools give averages. Averages are a starting point and not a verdict on your dog. Anything here that touches health is written to help you decide whether something is worth a vet's time, never to tell you what is wrong.

Budget for the recovery too

The fee is the part people plan for. The ten to fourteen days afterwards, with a cone, restricted movement and an incision that has to stay clean, is the part that catches them out. An indoor coir pad removes the walks from that window entirely.

SniffSociety makes the coir pad. Everything else on this page is free and always will be.
