Noida to Gangtok With a Dog

Roughly 1610km by road, which is around 22 hours of driving. Almost nobody does this by car with a dog. Train or plane is the sensible route.

Read this whichever end you are starting from. The return is the outbound with tireder passengers.

Do not drive this one

This is a 1610km haul and the road version is not worth it. Take the train, alighting for Gangtok at New Jalpaiguri, 120 km and roughly 4 to 5 hours away.

Leaving Noida

Gangtok lies east of Noida, roughly 1610km by road. Noida gets out easily eastward and painfully westward. The Yamuna and Noida Greater Noida expressways are among the better roads in the country, and the crossings into Delhi are among the worst, so a route that never touches the city saves an hour that no amount of early starting will.

Gangtok in one paragraph

Clean, cool and walkable in parts. Several high-altitude permits in Sikkim have their own conditions, and higher passes are a genuine altitude risk for dogs.

The full Gangtok guide covers the terrain underfoot, the access rules and the hazards nobody mentions until you arrive.

Veterinary access at the far end

A government veterinary hospital in Gangtok and limited private options. Anything specialised means Siliguri, which is four to five hours down.

Timing it from Noida

Delhi's climate: over 45C in summer, difficult winter air quality.

Diwali and summer heat.

Set that against Gangtok, where the advice is to go march to may, october to december and avoid June to September. The overlap between those two windows is your actual travel season, and it is usually narrower than either one suggests on its own.

Doing this journey with your dog

At around 22 hours of driving this is two days each way, which is the argument for the train. The last hour is where most of the damage happens. Everyone is tired, the driver wants it finished, and the dog has been patient for longer than anyone has noticed. On a journey this long the final leg deserves the same care as the first. Arriving twenty minutes later with a dog that is still coping is the better trade.

Our breed climate checker scores how your breed copes with the conditions at Gangtok, and the travel hub has the other 56 destinations if this one turns out to be the wrong fit.
