Leaving Lucknow

Matheran lies south west of Lucknow, roughly 1700km by road. Lucknow has good expressway access in two directions and ordinary highways everywhere else. The Agra and Purvanchal expressways are genuinely quick, so a route that uses one is worth a detour to reach. Winter fog is the seasonal constraint, and from December it can hold departures until nine or ten.

Where to break this journey

Driving means two or three days each way, and these are where those days end.

  • Ranthambore , wildlife in Rajasthan, around 39% of the way
  • Agra , heritage in Uttar Pradesh, around 25% of the way

Veterinary access at the far end

Very limited in Matheran itself. Nearest real veterinary care is Neral or Karjat at the base, about an hour including the descent.

Do this at the same time you book the room, not on the road out of Lucknow. Emergency vets by city.

Timing it from Lucknow

Hot summers past 44C and cold, foggy winters. Winter fog makes early morning travel genuinely slow and unsafe.

Summer heat, winter fog, and Diwali.

Set that against Matheran, where the advice is to go october to may and avoid monsoon. The overlap between those two windows is your actual travel season, and it is usually narrower than either one suggests on its own.

Doing this journey with your dog

At around 23 hours of driving this is two days each way, which is the argument for the train. Carry the vaccination card as a physical document. Hotels ask, some checkposts ask, and a vet at the far end will want it if anything happens. A photograph on a phone gets refused often enough to matter. Pack it with the lead, the bowl, poo bags and an old towel, and put the lot somewhere reachable rather than under the luggage for 23 hours.
