Lucknow to Manali With a Dog

Roughly 1020km by road, which is around 17 hours of driving. Almost nobody does this by car with a dog. Train or plane is the sensible route.

The route works the same from either end, so read it whether you are starting in Lucknow or in Manali.

Do not drive this one

Roughly 1020km each way puts this beyond a drive and into a relocation. Reach Manali by rail via Joginder Nagar or Chandigarh, then a long road transfer. No direct practical rail.

Leaving Lucknow

Manali lies north west of Lucknow, roughly 1020km by road. Lucknow has good expressway access in two directions and ordinary highways everywhere else. The Agra and Purvanchal expressways are genuinely quick, so a route that uses one is worth a detour to reach. Winter fog is the seasonal constraint, and from December it can hold departures until nine or ten.

Where to break this journey

Done by road this is a multi day trip, and these are where the days naturally break.

  • Jim Corbett , wildlife in Uttarakhand, around 52% of the way
  • Mukteshwar , hill in Uttarakhand, around 45% of the way
  • Nainital , hill in Uttarakhand, around 44% of the way

Of the 57 destinations we cover, Manali is the 23rd closest to Lucknow.

Closer from Lucknow, if this is further than you wanted

Manali in one paragraph

Cold suits Huskies, Saint Bernards and other thick-coated breeds that suffer in Indian cities. The drive is long and mountainous, so break it over two days. Snow is fun in short bursts, though paws crack in the cold and salt or grit on roads irritates them.

Veterinary access at the far end

Basic veterinary care in Manali and Kullu. Anything serious means a long drive down, so carry a first aid kit and any regular medication.

Two numbers beat one. Clinics close, and the second call is the one that matters at midnight. Emergency vets by city.

Timing it from Lucknow

Hot summers past 44C and cold, foggy winters. Winter fog makes early morning travel genuinely slow and unsafe.

Summer heat, winter fog, and Diwali.

Set that against Manali, where the advice is to go march to june, september to october and avoid January and February. The overlap between those two windows is your actual travel season, and it is usually narrower than either one suggests on its own.

Doing this journey with your dog

At around 17 hours of driving this is two days each way, which is the argument for the train. Toilet stops are not the same as rest stops and a dog will hold on far longer than is good for them out of anxiety. A dog that has not gone in five hours is not comfortable, it is worried. Walk them away from the road on a lead, give it five full minutes rather than one, and expect the first stop of any 17 hour drive to produce nothing at all.

Water and a collapsible bowl, their own food rather than a new one, the physical vaccination card, any medication, a spare lead, poo bags and an old towel. The vaccination card is the item people leave behind and then need.

Distances are straight line figures adjusted for how Indian roads actually run, which adds roughly a third and more in hills. Times follow from that. Both are approximations.
