Lucknow to Goa With a Dog

Roughly 1870km by road, which is around 29 hours of driving. Almost nobody does this by car with a dog. Train or plane is the sensible route.

Outbound and return together. Goa to Lucknow differs only in what time of day you set off.

Do not drive this one

At about 1870km the car costs you four days of the holiday. The railhead for Goa is Madgaon and Thivim are the main stations, both well connected to Mumbai and Bangalore.

Leaving Lucknow

Goa lies south west of Lucknow, roughly 1870km by road. Lucknow has good expressway access in two directions and ordinary highways everywhere else. The Agra and Purvanchal expressways are genuinely quick, so a route that uses one is worth a detour to reach. Winter fog is the seasonal constraint, and from December it can hold departures until nine or ten.

Where to break this journey

Done by road this is a multi day trip, and these are where the days naturally break.

  • Ranthambore , wildlife in Rajasthan, around 31% of the way
  • Nashik , vineyard in Maharashtra, around 72% of the way
  • Igatpuri , hill in Maharashtra, around 75% of the way

Goa in one paragraph

Beaches are the draw and also the risk. Sand gets hot enough to burn paws through the middle of the day, so walk early or after sunset. Sea water is not safe to drink and often causes stomach upset, so carry fresh water. Many shacks are relaxed about dogs on the sand, though this varies by beach and season.

Veterinary access at the far end

Vets in Panaji, Mapusa and Margao, so help is rarely more than 30 to 45 minutes away. Good coverage by Indian travel standards.

Do this at the same time you book the room, not on the road out of Lucknow. Emergency vets by city.

Timing it from Lucknow

Hot summers past 44C and cold, foggy winters. Winter fog makes early morning travel genuinely slow and unsafe.

Summer heat, winter fog, and Diwali.

Set that against Goa, where the advice is to go november to february and avoid June to September. The overlap between those two windows is your actual travel season, and it is usually narrower than either one suggests on its own.

Doing this journey with your dog

At around 29 hours of driving this is two days each way, which is the argument for the train. Motion sickness shows up in the first hour and is worth testing before the day itself. Drooling, yawning and restlessness come before the vomiting, and a dog that shows them on a twenty minute drive will not enjoy 29 hours. Speak to a vet about it in advance rather than on the road. It is also the strongest argument for the train.
