Lucknow to Dehradun With a Dog

Around 10 hours of driving, roughly 610km. That is a long day and most people split it over two.

Road conditions

Roughly 610km and about 10 hours, traffic depending. Roughly 6 hours from Delhi on a mostly good road, which is comfortably done in one day. It is the natural base for Mussoorie an hour above, so many people stay in the valley and drive up for the day.

Railhead if you would rather not drive: Dehradun, in the city itself, with an overnight train from Delhi.

Leaving Lucknow

Dehradun lies north west of Lucknow, roughly 610km by road. Lucknow has good expressway access in two directions and ordinary highways everywhere else. The Agra and Purvanchal expressways are genuinely quick, so a route that uses one is worth a detour to reach. Winter fog is the seasonal constraint, and from December it can hold departures until nine or ten.

Where to break this journey

Worth building one of these in even if you do not need it, because the dog does.

  • Nainital , hill in Uttarakhand, around 65% of the way
  • Mukteshwar , hill in Uttarakhand, around 66% of the way
  • Jim Corbett , wildlife in Uttarakhand, around 76% of the way

Closer from Lucknow, if this is further than you wanted

Dehradun in one paragraph

Most useful as a comfortable overnight break before continuing to Mussoorie or the higher hills, which turns a punishing single-day drive into two easy ones.

Veterinary access at the far end

Good for a hill town. Several private clinics, and Dehradun is the referral point for the whole Garhwal region.

Do this at the same time you book the room, not on the road out of Lucknow. Emergency vets by city.

Timing it from Lucknow

Hot summers past 44C and cold, foggy winters. Winter fog makes early morning travel genuinely slow and unsafe.

Summer heat, winter fog, and Diwali.

Set that against Dehradun, where the advice is to go september to april and avoid May and June. The overlap between those two windows is your actual travel season, and it is usually narrower than either one suggests on its own.

Doing this journey with your dog

At around 10 hours this is a long day out of Lucknow, and most people split it. The heat window decides the timetable. Leave before dawn and you buy four cool hours before the sun becomes a factor, which on a 10 hour run is most of the hard part done. Driving through the middle of an Indian afternoon with a dog in the back is the single most common way this goes wrong, air conditioning or not.
