Kochi to Gangtok With a Dog

Roughly 3370km by road, which is around 47 hours of driving. Almost nobody does this by car with a dog. Train or plane is the sensible route.

Written for the journey in both directions. Gangtok back to Kochi is the same road with the light behind you.

Do not drive this one

At roughly 3370km each way this is two full days on the road in each direction. The railhead for Gangtok is New Jalpaiguri, 120 km and roughly 4 to 5 hours away.

Leaving Kochi

Gangtok lies north east of Kochi, roughly 3370km by road. Kochi is slow to leave and the reason is the water rather than the cars. Bridges and backwater crossings mean detours that a map underestimates, and NH66 through the district is rarely fast. Budget more time than the distance suggests, especially heading north.

Where to break this journey

Driving it is only sensible as a multi day trip, and these are the natural places to end each day.

  • Gokarna , beach in Karnataka, around 24% of the way
  • Varanasi , heritage in Uttar Pradesh, around 80% of the way
  • Pondicherry , coastal in Puducherry, around 19% of the way

Of the 57 destinations we cover, Gangtok is the 45th closest to Kochi.

Closer from Kochi, if this is further than you wanted

Gangtok in one paragraph

Clean, cool and walkable in parts. Several high-altitude permits in Sikkim have their own conditions, and higher passes are a genuine altitude risk for dogs.

The full Gangtok guide explains the terrain, the access and the seasonal problems before you commit to the drive.

Veterinary access at the far end

A government veterinary hospital in Gangtok and limited private options. Anything specialised means Siliguri, which is four to five hours down.

Write the number down as well as saving it. Phone batteries choose their moments. Emergency vets by city.

Timing it from Kochi

Humid year round with heavy monsoon. Skin, ear and paw problems are constant, and standing water carries leptospirosis risk.

The monsoon dominates everything from June to September.

Set that against Gangtok, where the advice is to go march to may, october to december and avoid June to September. The overlap between those two windows is your actual travel season, and it is usually narrower than either one suggests on its own.

Doing this journey with your dog

At around 47 hours of driving this is two days each way, which is the argument for the train. Water is the thing people underestimate. Offer it at every stop even when the dog refuses, because a dog that has been panting for two hours in a car is losing more than it looks. Over 47 hours you want a proper break every couple of hours. A parked car in Indian sun reaches temperatures that kill inside ten minutes, and a cracked window changes nothing.

Our breed climate checker scores how your breed copes with the conditions at Gangtok, and the travel hub has the other 56 destinations if this one turns out to be the wrong fit.
