Jaipur to Gangtok With a Dog
Roughly 1840km by road, which is around 25 hours of driving. Almost nobody does this by car with a dog. Train or plane is the sensible route.
Both directions, one plan. The road from Gangtok does not change, though the traffic leaving it might.
Do not drive this one
1840km means multiple overnight stops each way. Rail is the sensible answer, and Gangtok is reached from New Jalpaiguri, 120 km and roughly 4 to 5 hours away.
Leaving Jaipur
Gangtok lies east of Jaipur, roughly 1840km by road. Jaipur departures are quick and the heat is the thing to plan around rather than the traffic. From April the middle of the day is genuinely dangerous for a dog in a car, so the useful driving happens before ten and after five, and the road surface itself holds warmth well into the evening.
Where to break this journey

- Varanasi , heritage in Uttar Pradesh, around 58% of the way

- Nainital , hill in Uttarakhand, around 35% of the way

- Jaipur to Mussoorie , about 14 hours, hill in Uttarakhand
Gangtok in one paragraph
Clean, cool and walkable in parts. Several high-altitude permits in Sikkim have their own conditions, and higher passes are a genuine altitude risk for dogs.
The full Gangtok guide has the ground conditions, the restrictions and the things that catch first time visitors.
Veterinary access at the far end
A government veterinary hospital in Gangtok and limited private options. Anything specialised means Siliguri, which is four to five hours down.
Know the route to the clinic as well as the number. A map at 2am in an unfamiliar town is slow. Emergency vets by city.
Timing it from Jaipur
Very hot and dry in summer, past 45C. Dry heat is slightly kinder than humid heat but heatstroke risk remains high.
Summer heat and Diwali fireworks are the two peaks.
Set that against Gangtok, where the advice is to go march to may, october to december and avoid June to September. The overlap between those two windows is your actual travel season, and it is usually narrower than either one suggests on its own.
Doing this journey with your dog
At around 25 hours of driving this is two days each way, which is the argument for the train. Decide in advance what you do if the dog will not settle. Most do within the first hour, and the ones that do not are usually telling you something about the crate, the heat or the seat rather than about travel. Over 25 hours there is time to fix it. Pushing on with a distressed dog rarely improves anything.
