Jaipur to Chandigarh With a Dog

Around 9 hours of driving, roughly 560km. That is a long day and most people split it over two.

Read this whichever end you are starting from. The return is the outbound with tireder passengers.

Time on the road

Roughly 560km and about 9 hours, traffic depending. About 5 hours from Delhi on a good expressway, one of the easiest long drives in north India with a dog. It is also the standard overnight break for anyone driving on to Manali, Shimla or Dharamshala.

Railhead if you would rather not drive: Chandigarh Junction, well connected to Delhi.

Leaving Jaipur

Chandigarh lies due north of Jaipur, roughly 560km by road. Jaipur departures are quick and the heat is the thing to plan around rather than the traffic. From April the middle of the day is genuinely dangerous for a dog in a car, so the useful driving happens before ten and after five, and the road surface itself holds warmth well into the evening.

Of the 57 destinations we cover, Chandigarh is the 8th closest to Jaipur.

Closer from Jaipur, if this is further than you wanted

Chandigarh in one paragraph

Unusually walkable and green for an Indian city, with wide pavements and large parks, which makes it genuinely comfortable with a dog. A common overnight stop en route to Himachal.

The full Chandigarh guide goes into the terrain, what the two of you can do there, the places dogs are turned away from and the local hazards.

Veterinary access at the far end

Among the best on this list. Multiple well equipped private clinics, and the government veterinary hospital in Sector 38.

Know the route to the clinic as well as the number. A map at 2am in an unfamiliar town is slow. Emergency vets by city.

Timing it from Jaipur

Very hot and dry in summer, past 45C. Dry heat is slightly kinder than humid heat but heatstroke risk remains high.

Summer heat and Diwali fireworks are the two peaks.

Set that against Chandigarh, where the advice is to go october to march and avoid May and June. The overlap between those two windows is your actual travel season, and it is usually narrower than either one suggests on its own.

Doing this journey with your dog

At around 9 hours this is a long day out of Jaipur, and most people split it. Decide in advance what you do if the dog will not settle. Most do within the first hour, and the ones that do not are usually telling you something about the crate, the heat or the seat rather than about travel. On a 9 hour drive there is time to stop, rearrange, and start again. Pushing on with a distressed dog rarely improves anything.
