Indore to Igatpuri With a Dog

Around 13 hours of driving, roughly 600km. That is a long day and most people split it over two.

Written to be read in either direction. Coming back from Igatpuri to Indore is the same road and usually the harder half.

How the road actually runs

Roughly 600km and about 13 hours, traffic depending. About 3 hours from Mumbai and 4 from Pune, up the Kasara ghat. The ghat is short but full of trucks and tight bends, so it is the stretch most likely to make a dog carsick on an otherwise easy drive. The Central Railway line runs alongside and Igatpuri station is right in town, which makes the train a real option.

Railhead if you would rather not drive: Igatpuri, in town, on the Mumbai to Nashik Central line.

Leaving Indore

Igatpuri lies south west of Indore, roughly 600km by road. Indore has some of the better road access in central India and departures are rarely the problem. Distances are the problem: most worthwhile destinations from here are long days rather than half days, so an overnight stop matters more from Indore than from a coastal city.

Of the 57 destinations we cover, Igatpuri is the 11th closest to Indore.

Closer from Indore, if this is further than you wanted

Igatpuri in one paragraph

Green and dramatic in and just after monsoon, with villa stays that suit dogs. Short enough drive from Mumbai and Nashik for a weekend.

The full Igatpuri guide covers the terrain underfoot, the access rules and the hazards nobody mentions until you arrive.

Veterinary access at the far end

Basic locally. Nashik is about an hour away and has proper clinics, and Mumbai is three hours. Reasonable cover by hill standards.

Get the number into your phone before you leave Indore, not after something has happened. Emergency vets by city.

Timing it from Indore

Hot summers, moderate otherwise. Easier than the far north or the coast.

Summer heat and Diwali.

Set that against Igatpuri, where the advice is to go october to february and avoid peak monsoon weekends. The overlap between those two windows is your actual travel season, and it is usually narrower than either one suggests on its own.

Doing this journey with your dog

At around 13 hours this is a long day out of Indore, and most people split it. Take a photograph of the dog on your phone the morning you leave. It sounds morbid and it takes ten seconds, and if a lead slips at a fuel stop four hours from home it is the difference between describing a brown dog and showing one. Add your number to the collar tag before a 13 hour trip rather than after it.

Water and a collapsible bowl, their own food rather than a new one, the physical vaccination card, any medication, a spare lead, poo bags and an old towel. The vaccination card is the item people leave behind and then need.
