Hyderabad to Kaziranga With a Dog

Roughly 2370km by road, which is around 37 hours of driving. Almost nobody does this by car with a dog. Train or plane is the sensible route.

Covers the outbound and the run home. There is no separate Kaziranga to Hyderabad page because it would say the same thing.

Do not drive this one

Roughly 2370km. This is the distance at which the train becomes the obvious answer rather than the frugal one. Trains for Kaziranga run to Furkating or Jorhat, then a road transfer of one to two hours.

Leaving Hyderabad

Kaziranga lies north east of Hyderabad, roughly 2370km by road. Hyderabad's ORR makes departures unusually painless, and most highways out are in good condition. Distance rather than congestion is the constraint from here.

Where to break this journey

If the car is non negotiable, use these as overnight halts rather than pushing through.

  • Varanasi , heritage in Uttar Pradesh, around 54% of the way
  • Darjeeling , hill in West Bengal, around 80% of the way
  • Gangtok , hill in Sikkim, around 82% of the way

Closer from Hyderabad, if this is further than you wanted

Kaziranga in one paragraph

Pets are not permitted inside the national park under any circumstances, which is true of Indian national parks generally. If you travel here with a dog, someone stays outside the park with them.

The full Kaziranga guide has the detail on what is walkable, what is off limits to dogs and what the season does to the place.

Veterinary access at the far end

Basic. Jorhat, about two hours away, has better options. Bring your own supplies.

Find the number before you leave Hyderabad. Searching for it at 11pm in an unfamiliar town is the worst possible time. Emergency vets by city.

Timing it from Hyderabad

Long hot summers, with heatstroke risk from March through June. Winters are comfortable.

Summer heat is the main risk. Bathukamma and Diwali bring noise stress.

Set that against Kaziranga, where the advice is to go november to april and avoid May to October. The overlap between those two windows is your actual travel season, and it is usually narrower than either one suggests on its own.

Doing this journey with your dog

At around 37 hours of driving this is two days each way, which is the argument for the train. Motion sickness shows up in the first hour and is worth testing before the day itself. Drooling, yawning and restlessness come before the vomiting, and a dog that shows them on a twenty minute drive will not enjoy 37 hours. Speak to a vet about it in advance rather than on the road. It is also the strongest argument for the train.

Questions people ask

How far is Kaziranga from Hyderabad?

Roughly 2370km by road, north east of Hyderabad, which is around 37 hours of driving. At that distance almost nobody drives it with a dog, and the figure is an estimate rather than a looked-up number.

Should I fly or take the train from Hyderabad to Kaziranga?

For a dog over about 10kg the answer is the train. For a small dog either works, and the deciding factor is usually whether you can get a confirmed first class booking rather than anything to do with the animal.

Can I drive from Hyderabad to Kaziranga with a dog if I want to?

You can, over two or three days. Varanasi, Darjeeling, Gangtok sit broadly along the corridor and make sensible overnight stops.

What is the best time to visit Kaziranga with a dog?

November to April. Avoid May to October, because park closed during monsoon flooding.

Do I need to book pet friendly stays in Kaziranga ahead?

Yes, and confirm by phone rather than trusting a listing. Properties marked pet friendly frequently turn out to mean small dogs only, or specific rooms, or an undisclosed fee. Get the size limit in writing.

What should I pack for Hyderabad to Kaziranga?

Water and a collapsible bowl, their own food rather than a new one, the physical vaccination card, any medication, a spare lead, poo bags and an old towel. The vaccination card is the item people leave behind and then need.

We estimate rather than look these up, because no map service covers 456 pairs consistently. The model is calibrated on 56 verified routes and states its own error honestly: most within an hour, nearly all within two.
