Gurgaon to Dharamshala and McLeodganj With a Dog

Around 13 hours of driving, roughly 610km. That is a long day and most people split it over two.

Both directions on one page. Plan the return the same way you planned the drive to Dharamshala and McLeodganj.

The drive

Roughly 610km and about 13 hours, traffic depending. Roughly 6 hours from Chandigarh and 10 to 12 from Delhi. Long enough that an overnight break at Chandigarh is worthwhile. The final climb to McLeodganj is narrow and busy.

Railhead if you would rather not drive: Pathankot, about 3 hours away by road.

Leaving Gurgaon

Dharamshala and McLeodganj lies due north of Gurgaon, roughly 610km by road. Leaving Gurgaon is really a question of which way you cross the expressway. Southbound on NH48 is clear early and solid from about 8am once Manesar traffic builds, and anything through Delhi is worse than going around it. Aim to be past Kherki Daula before seven.

Where to break this journey

These fall on the way rather than off it, so the cost of stopping is a coffee and a walk.

Veterinary access at the far end

Veterinary help in Dharamshala, plus animal welfare organisations in the area. Reasonable coverage.

Do this at the same time you book the room, not on the road out of Gurgaon. Emergency vets by city.

Timing it from Gurgaon

Gurgaon shares Delhi's extremes: over 45C in May and June, and difficult winter air. The high rise stock also means many dogs get less ground level exercise than their breed needs, which shows up as weight and joint problems.

Diwali is the peak week for emergencies. Summer heat is the other.

Set that against Dharamshala and McLeodganj, where the advice is to go march to june, september to november and avoid July and August. The overlap between those two windows is your actual travel season, and it is usually narrower than either one suggests on its own.

Doing this journey with your dog

At around 13 hours this is a long day out of Gurgaon, and most people split it. Take a photograph of the dog on your phone the morning you leave. It sounds morbid and it takes ten seconds, and if a lead slips at a fuel stop four hours from home it is the difference between describing a brown dog and showing one. Add your number to the collar tag before a 13 hour trip rather than after it.

Our breed climate checker scores how your breed copes with the conditions at Dharamshala and McLeodganj, and the travel hub has the other 56 destinations if this one turns out to be the wrong fit.
