Delhi to Shillong With a Dog

Roughly 2160km by road, which is around 30 hours of driving. Almost nobody does this by car with a dog. Train or plane is the sensible route.

Delhi to Shillong and Shillong to Delhi are one journey, so everything here applies whichever way you are pointing.

Do not drive this one

Roughly 2160km. Two days out, two days back, and a dog that spends more of the holiday in a car than out of it. For Shillong the railhead is Guwahati, 100 km and about 3 hours below.

Leaving Delhi

Shillong lies east of Delhi, roughly 2160km by road. Leaving Delhi is the first hour of any trip and the worst. Aim to clear the city before 6am or after 10pm, because the ring roads and the NH exits are where a seven hour drive becomes nine. In winter, fog on the northern highways delays departures more reliably than traffic does.

Where to break this journey

Driving it is only sensible as a multi day trip, and these are the natural places to end each day.

  • Varanasi , heritage in Uttar Pradesh, around 46% of the way
  • Darjeeling , hill in West Bengal, around 74% of the way
  • Gangtok , hill in Sikkim, around 76% of the way

Of the 57 destinations we cover, Shillong is the 42nd closest to Delhi.

Closer from Delhi, if this is further than you wanted

Shillong in one paragraph

Mild temperatures suit most dogs. Meghalaya's rainfall is extraordinary, so monsoon travel means genuinely constant rain rather than showers.

The full Shillong guide goes into the terrain, what the two of you can do there, the places dogs are turned away from and the local hazards.

Veterinary access at the far end

A government veterinary complex in Shillong and a few private clinics. Guwahati, three to four hours away, is the referral point.

Worth ten minutes in Delhi rather than an hour of panic at the other end. Emergency vets by city.

Timing it from Delhi

Delhi is the hardest climate in this list for a dog. Summer runs past 45C from May, and heatstroke cases climb through it. Winter smog is genuinely difficult for flat faced breeds and older dogs with any respiratory weakness.

Diwali is the busiest week of the year for Delhi emergency clinics, between firework injuries and dogs who have bolted. May and June are the heat months.

Set that against Shillong, where the advice is to go october to april and avoid June to September. The overlap between those two windows is your actual travel season, and it is usually narrower than either one suggests on its own.

Doing this journey with your dog

At around 30 hours of driving this is two days each way, which is the argument for the train. Age changes the plan more than distance does. A senior dog needs the journey split rather than shortened, since stiffness arrives the morning after rather than during. A flat faced breed needs the cool hours whatever the distance, because panting is the entire cooling system and a warm car defeats it. Over 30 hours both become the main planning constraint.

Our breed climate checker scores how your breed copes with the conditions at Shillong, and the travel hub has the other 56 destinations if this one turns out to be the wrong fit.
