Delhi to Panchgani With a Dog

Roughly 1800km by road, which is around 25 hours of driving. Almost nobody does this by car with a dog. Train or plane is the sensible route.

Written for the journey in both directions. Panchgani back to Delhi is the same road with the light behind you.

Do not drive this one

At 1800km the car stops making sense. You would be driving through two nights or paying for two hotels in each direction. Railhead for Panchgani: Wathar or Satara, roughly 2 hours by road.

Leaving Delhi

Panchgani lies due south of Delhi, roughly 1800km by road. Leaving Delhi is the first hour of any trip and the worst. Aim to clear the city before 6am or after 10pm, because the ring roads and the NH exits are where a seven hour drive becomes nine. In winter, fog on the northern highways delays departures more reliably than traffic does.

Where to break this journey

The only humane way to drive this is in stages, and these are the stages.

  • Mount Abu , hill in Rajasthan, around 51% of the way
  • Udaipur , heritage in Rajasthan, around 46% of the way
  • Jodhpur , heritage in Rajasthan, around 39% of the way

Of the 57 destinations we cover, Panchgani is the 38th closest to Delhi.

Closer from Delhi, if this is further than you wanted

Panchgani in one paragraph

Quieter than neighbouring Mahabaleshwar, with open tablelands that suit dogs who want space to walk. Same winding ghat approach, so plan for motion sickness.

The full Panchgani guide goes into the terrain, what the two of you can do there, the places dogs are turned away from and the local hazards.

Veterinary access at the far end

Basic help in Panchgani and Wai. Serious cases go to Pune, about 3 hours away.

Find the number before you leave Delhi. Searching for it at 11pm in an unfamiliar town is the worst possible time. Emergency vets by city.

Timing it from Delhi

Delhi is the hardest climate in this list for a dog. Summer runs past 45C from May, and heatstroke cases climb through it. Winter smog is genuinely difficult for flat faced breeds and older dogs with any respiratory weakness.

Diwali is the busiest week of the year for Delhi emergency clinics, between firework injuries and dogs who have bolted. May and June are the heat months.

Set that against Panchgani, where the advice is to go october to may and avoid peak monsoon. The overlap between those two windows is your actual travel season, and it is usually narrower than either one suggests on its own.

Doing this journey with your dog

At around 25 hours of driving this is two days each way, which is the argument for the train. Water is the thing people underestimate. Offer it at every stop even when the dog refuses, because a dog that has been panting for two hours in a car is losing more than it looks. Over 25 hours you want a proper break every couple of hours. A parked car in Indian sun reaches temperatures that kill inside ten minutes, and a cracked window changes nothing.

Our breed climate checker scores how your breed copes with the conditions at Panchgani, and the travel hub has the other 56 destinations if this one turns out to be the wrong fit.
