Chennai to Kaziranga With a Dog

Roughly 2600km by road, which is around 41 hours of driving. Almost nobody does this by car with a dog. Train or plane is the sensible route.

The route works the same from either end, so read it whether you are starting in Chennai or in Kaziranga.

Do not drive this one

2600km is not a drive, it is a relocation. Four of your holiday days would be spent in a car. Trains reach Kaziranga via Furkating or Jorhat, then a road transfer of one to two hours.

Leaving Chennai

Kaziranga lies north east of Chennai, roughly 2600km by road. Chennai exits well on the main highways, and the heat is the real planning problem rather than traffic. Leaving at dawn matters more here than in most Indian cities, because the middle of the day is genuinely dangerous for a dog in a car.

Of the 57 destinations we cover, Kaziranga is the 50th closest to Chennai.

Closer from Chennai, if this is further than you wanted

Kaziranga in one paragraph

Pets are not permitted inside the national park under any circumstances, which is true of Indian national parks generally. If you travel here with a dog, someone stays outside the park with them.

The full Kaziranga guide deals with what there is to do together, the closed doors and the local risks.

Veterinary access at the far end

Basic. Jorhat, about two hours away, has better options. Bring your own supplies.

Worth ten minutes in Chennai rather than an hour of panic at the other end. Emergency vets by city.

Timing it from Chennai

Hot and humid for most of the year, which means heat risk runs far longer than the April to June window that applies further north. Skin problems are constant.

The northeast monsoon around October to December brings flooding in parts of the city, and with it water contamination risks.

Set that against Kaziranga, where the advice is to go november to april and avoid May to October. The overlap between those two windows is your actual travel season, and it is usually narrower than either one suggests on its own.

Doing this journey with your dog

At around 41 hours of driving this is two days each way, which is the argument for the train. Plan the first stop before you leave, not when the dog starts complaining. Somewhere with shade and a patch of grass inside the first ninety minutes sets the pattern for the rest of the 41 hours, and it tells you early whether this dog travels well. The stop you improvise on a highway shoulder helps nobody.

Questions people ask

How far is Kaziranga from Chennai?

Roughly 2600km by road, north east of Chennai, which is around 41 hours of driving. At that distance almost nobody drives it with a dog, and the figure is an estimate rather than a looked-up number.

Should I fly or take the train from Chennai to Kaziranga?

Flying is faster and harder on the dog. Airport handling, the noise, the hold if they are over the cabin limit, and a crate they cannot leave. A train is longer in hours and easier in every other respect, and you can walk them at station halts.

Can I drive from Chennai to Kaziranga with a dog if I want to?

You can, but it is two full days each way, which is four holiday days spent in a car. Consider whether the dog gains anything from it.

What is the best time to visit Kaziranga with a dog?

November to April. Avoid May to October, because park closed during monsoon flooding.

Do I need to book pet friendly stays in Kaziranga ahead?

Yes, and confirm by phone rather than trusting a listing. Properties marked pet friendly frequently turn out to mean small dogs only, or specific rooms, or an undisclosed fee. Get the size limit in writing.

What should I pack for Chennai to Kaziranga?

Water and a collapsible bowl, their own food rather than a new one, the physical vaccination card, any medication, a spare lead, poo bags and an old towel. The vaccination card is the item people leave behind and then need.

The kilometres and hours are modelled, not looked up. Back tested against 56 verified routes, most land within an hour. Check a live map on the morning you leave.

Still working out the details?

The trip planner handles the sequencing: travel days, rest days, and which bookings need making before the others.
