Chandigarh to Amritsar With a Dog

Around 4 hours of driving each way, roughly 260km by road. Comfortable to do in a day with breaks.

Covers both runs. The stretch out of Chandigarh and the stretch back into it are the two parts worth timing.

The road, in brief

About 8 hours from Delhi on NH44, flat and fast the whole way. Winter fog can turn that into 12, so start after the fog lifts rather than before dawn.

Railhead if you would rather not drive: Amritsar Junction.

Leaving Chandigarh

Amritsar lies north west of Chandigarh, roughly 260km by road. Chandigarh is built for leaving. The grid empties onto the highways without the tangle most Indian cities have, and hill routes northward are the natural direction. The constraint is the hills rather than the city: weekend traffic to Himachal builds from Friday evening and does not clear until Sunday night.

Of the 57 destinations we cover, Amritsar is the 5th closest to Chandigarh. That makes it one of the easiest trips you can take from here.

Closer from Chandigarh, if this is further than you wanted

Amritsar in one paragraph

The Golden Temple does not permit pets. Winters are cold and comfortable for walking, summers are severe.

The full Amritsar guide sets out the walkable ground, the places that turn dogs away and what the weather does to it.

Veterinary access at the far end

Good. Several private clinics, and GADVASU at Ludhiana is about two and a half hours away for anything specialised.

Ask about hours rather than assuming. Round the clock is advertised more often than it is staffed. Emergency vets by city.

Timing it from Chandigarh

Hot summers and genuinely cold winters, with a comfortable spring and autumn. Easier than most north Indian cities for a dog.

Summer heat and Diwali.

Set that against Amritsar, where the advice is to go october to march and avoid May and June. The overlap between those two windows is your actual travel season, and it is usually narrower than either one suggests on its own.

Doing this journey with your dog

At around 4 hours this is a comfortable single day out of Chandigarh. Bring water from home for the first day rather than buying it on the road. A change of water upsets more Indian dogs than a change of food does, and the effect arrives about six hours in, which on a 4 hour drive is the worst possible timing. Two litres in a bottle you already own solves it.

Our breed climate checker scores how your breed copes with the conditions at Amritsar, and the travel hub has the other 56 destinations if this one turns out to be the wrong fit.

Questions people ask

How far is Amritsar from Chandigarh?

Roughly 260km by road, north west of Chandigarh, which is about 4 hours of driving. That is an estimate rather than a looked-up figure, and the real time depends on how long it takes to clear Chandigarh and on the last stretch.

Can I do Chandigarh to Amritsar in a day with a dog?

A day trip in the technical sense. 4 hours there and back is fine for a young dog and a lot for an older one.

Where should I stop between Chandigarh and Amritsar?

Nothing on our list sits neatly on this corridor, so plan stops around fuel and food rather than destinations. Every two hours, water each time.

What is the best time to visit Amritsar with a dog?

October to March. Avoid May and June, because extreme heat.

Do I need to book pet friendly stays in Amritsar ahead?

Yes, and confirm by phone rather than trusting a listing. Properties marked pet friendly frequently turn out to mean small dogs only, or specific rooms, or an undisclosed fee. Get the size limit in writing.

What should I pack for Chandigarh to Amritsar?

Water and a collapsible bowl, their own food rather than a new one, the physical vaccination card, any medication, a spare lead, poo bags and an old towel. The vaccination card is the item people leave behind and then need.

Estimated from a model calibrated on routes with known times. The number assumes an ordinary day, which excludes festival weekends, heavy monsoon and any highway being resurfaced.
