What the road is like

Roughly 630km and about 12 hours, traffic depending. Long haul from Mumbai on NH66, around 12 hours with breaks. Roads are decent but ghat sections are winding. Splitting overnight near Kolhapur or Ratnagiri makes it far easier on a dog.

Railhead if you would rather not drive: Madgaon and Thivim are the main stations, both well connected to Mumbai and Bangalore.

Leaving Bangalore

Goa lies north west of Bangalore, roughly 630km by road. Bangalore's exits clear faster than Delhi's or Mumbai's, but the ORR still costs you forty minutes at the wrong hour. Head out before 7am and the first hour is easy. Sunday evening returns are the reliably painful part.

The kindest large city climate in India for a dog, which is why thick coated breeds cope here in a way they do not elsewhere. Monsoon brings the usual paw and skin problems.
