Cat Not Using the Litter Box? Here's How to Fix It
Cat not using litter box in India? Fix the most common causes step by step, from box placement to litter type, in any Indian flat or apartment.
Your cat was perfectly box-trained. Then one day, you find a wet patch on the mosaic floor or behind the shoe rack, and the litter box is sitting there, untouched and pristine. This is one of the most common problems for cat parents in India, and it almost always has a fixable cause.
Step 1: Rule Out a Health Problem First
Before you rearrange furniture or buy new litter, call your vet.
A cat not using the litter box suddenly is sometimes a cat in pain. Urinary tract infections, kidney issues, and constipation can all make the box feel like the enemy. If your cat is straining, crying while eliminating, or going very frequently in small amounts, that is a medical emergency, not a behaviour problem.
Get a vet check done. Once health is ruled out, move on to the steps below.

Cat care in India →Step 2: Check How Clean the Box Actually Is
Cats have roughly 200 million scent receptors. What smells "fine" to you smells like a blocked drain to them.
The rule most vets suggest: scoop at least once a day, full litter change every 7-10 days. In Indian summers, especially in cities like Chennai or Kolkata where humidity makes odours worse, you may need to scoop twice a day.
Also check the box itself. Plastic trays absorb odour over time. If yours is more than a year old and scratched up on the inside, it may be holding smells that no amount of scooping will fix. Replace it. A basic tray costs ₹300-600 at most pet stores.
Step 3: Look at Where the Box Is Sitting
Location is the most underestimated factor. Cats want privacy. They also want an escape route. A box wedged into a corner of a small bathroom with only one entry point can feel like a trap.
The ideal spot in an Indian flat is quiet, low-traffic, and away from the feeding area. A spare bathroom works well. So does a spot near the balcony door if foot traffic is low. Read more about this in where to place your cat's litter box in an Indian home.
If you have recently moved the box, moved flats, or added new furniture nearby, that alone can trigger avoidance. Cats are territorial about their routines.
Step 4: Reconsider the Litter You Are Using
Not all litter works the same way, and your cat has opinions.
Heavily scented litters are marketed to humans, not cats. The artificial fragrance often puts cats off. Unscented clumping litter is usually the safest starting point. In India, bentonite-based clumping litters are widely available and work well for most cats.
Some cats also dislike litter that is too coarse or too fine. If you recently switched brands, switch back and see if the problem resolves. Our cat litter guide for Indian flats breaks down what to look for by litter type and budget.
Step 5: Check the Litter Depth
This one gets skipped constantly.
Most cats prefer 5-7 cm of litter. Too shallow and they cannot dig properly. Too deep and it feels unstable underfoot. If you have been filling the box to the brim to reduce how often you top it up, that could be the problem.
Refill to the right depth and observe for 48 hours.
Step 6: Add a Second Box If You Have Multiple Cats
The general rule is one box per cat, plus one extra. Two cats need three boxes, minimum.
Even if one cat is the only one using a box, competition for territory can make a single-box setup stressful. A cat who feels anxious about access will find alternatives. In a two-bedroom flat, two boxes in separate spots is usually enough.
Step 7: Clean the Accident Spots Properly
If your cat has started going in a particular corner or on a specific rug, she will keep returning there as long as she can smell it.
Household cleaners often do not break down the uric acid in cat urine. Use an enzymatic cleaner specifically designed for pet accidents. These are available at most pet stores in India for around ₹400-800 per bottle. Once the smell is genuinely gone, the repeat visits usually stop.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Punishing the cat. Rubbing her nose in it or scolding her near the box makes her associate the box with stress. It makes things worse, reliably.
Switching litter brands mid-troubleshoot. Change one variable at a time. If you change the litter, the location, and the box type all at once, you will not know what fixed it.
Putting the box near her food. Cats are clean animals by instinct. Eating next to a toilet is not something they accept willingly.
Buying a covered box to solve odour. Covered boxes trap smell inside, which is exactly what cats hate. They suit human aesthetics, not cat preferences. If your cat was fine with a covered box before and is now avoiding it, try removing the lid.
Assuming the problem is behavioural without ruling out illness. This is the most costly mistake. A UTI that goes untreated for a week because a parent assumed it was a behaviour issue can become a serious problem.
FAQ
Why is my cat suddenly not using the litter box after years of no problems?
Sudden changes almost always point to one of two things: a health issue or a change in environment. Has anything shifted recently? New pet, new furniture, a renovation, a move? If the environment is the same, see a vet first. A cat not using the litter box out of nowhere, with no other changes, warrants a physical exam before any behaviour fixes.
How many litter boxes do I need for one cat in a small flat?
One cat needs at minimum two boxes, placed in different spots. In a compact apartment, even a 1BHK, two boxes on opposite sides of the flat gives your cat options and reduces anxiety around access. This becomes more important if you are away at work for long hours.
My cat uses the litter box sometimes but also goes on the floor. What does that mean?
Partial use often points to a box that is not being cleaned frequently enough, or a litter depth and texture issue. It can also mean your cat likes the location but not the litter, or vice versa. Try scooping more often for five days and see if the floor accidents decrease.
Can stress cause a cat to stop using the litter box in India?
Yes, and it is more common than most people expect. Diwali fireworks, construction noise from a nearby building, a new pet, or even a new family member can trigger litter box avoidance. Creating a quiet, predictable spot for the box and keeping the routine consistent helps. Feliway diffusers, available in Indian pet stores for around ₹1,500-2,000, can also take the edge off during stressful periods.
