What is written here comes from municipal announcements and news reporting, and things change. Confirm on the phone first.
The first few hours
- Take your time. There is no rush in the first hour, and you are allowed to sit with them.
- Keep the body cool and out of direct sun. In Indian heat this matters within a couple of hours. A cool room, the floor rather than a bed, and a fan.
- Wrap them in a cloth or sheet they knew. If there is any fluid, place a towel underneath.
- Ring the facility before you leave the house. Most have fixed hours, several need a booking, and being turned away with a body in the car is the worst version of this day.
- If you have other pets, let them see the body if they want to. It is widely reported to help them settle, and it costs nothing.
In Kolkata
No municipal facility open yet
We have not found an operational municipal pet crematorium in Kolkata. Ring the municipal corporation and ask, and ask local animal welfare organisations who they use, because they deal with this constantly and will know.
Private pet cremation services operate in most Indian cities and will usually collect from your home, which matters at night or if you cannot drive. They cost more than a municipal facility. Ask what you are paying for, whether the cremation is individual or communal, and whether ashes are returned, because those three answers vary a great deal between operators.
About burial
Burial is far more restricted than most owners realise, and finding out from a watchman or a neighbour is the worst way to learn it.
- Burying an animal in a public place, a park, a roadside, open ground or a society compound is not permitted in most Indian cities, and several corporations have said they will fine people for it.
- Some corporations will collect a body, but that is disposal rather than a funeral, and it is worth knowing the difference before you call.
- Depth matters if burial on your own land is genuinely an option. Shallow burial is what leads to animals being dug up.
- Do not put a body in a household bin or a water body. Both are illegal and both are how disease spreads.
- Cremation is the route most municipal corporations now provide for, which is why the facilities below have appeared in the last few years.
If you have other pets at home
Let them see the body if they show any interest. Animals who are simply removed often search the house for weeks. It is a small thing and it seems to help them understand.
