Call first, every time. Whether a vet is physically present overnight changes week to week, and a clinic that ran a 24 hour service last year may not this year. Ringing also lets them prepare before you arrive, which is worth more than the few minutes it costs. Everything below is taken from each clinic's own website and is not verified by us.

What goes wrong in Hyderabad
Long hot summers, with heatstroke risk from March through June. Winters are comfortable.
Summer heat is the main risk. Bathukamma and Diwali bring noise stress.
Getting there
The city is spread out and the newer western areas are far from the old city, so nearest on a map can be a long drive.

None of this replaces a vet, and none of it is a diagnosis. It is what to do in the twenty minutes between deciding to go and arriving.
Heatstroke
April to June across most of India, and through to September in the south and on the coast
Signs: Heavy panting that does not settle, bright red gums, unsteadiness, vomiting, collapse.
While you travel: Move them into shade or air conditioning. Wet the paws, belly and armpits with cool, not ice cold, water. Do not force water into the mouth of a dog who is barely conscious. Ring ahead so they are ready for you.
Flat faced breeds go down faster and at lower temperatures than owners expect. So do overweight dogs and thick coated breeds kept in Indian cities.
Something eaten
All year, and sharply worse around festivals
Signs: Vomiting, drooling, tremors, sudden lethargy, or simply the wrapper on the floor.
While you travel: Take the packaging with you. Do not make them vomit unless a vet tells you to, because some substances do more damage coming back up.
Chocolate, xylitol in sugar free sweets, grapes and raisins, and onion heavy leftovers are the usual ones. Raisins in particular turn up in Indian sweets.
Fireworks panic and escape
Diwali, New Year, and any wedding season evening
Signs: Bolting, hiding, refusing to come in, injuries from running into traffic or through glass.
While you travel: If they have run, ring the clinic anyway and ask whether anyone has brought in a dog matching yours. Vets are often the first place a found dog goes.
Diwali week is the single busiest period for Indian emergency clinics. Assume queues and ring first.
Tick fever
Worst after the monsoon, though present year round in most cities
Signs: High fever, refusing food, lethargy, pale gums, sometimes bleeding from the nose.
While you travel: Bring them in rather than waiting it out. This is treatable early and dangerous late.
One of the most common serious illnesses in Indian dogs and frequently mistaken for a dull day.
Bloat, or twisted stomach
All year, usually within a couple of hours of a large meal
Signs: A hard swollen belly, retching without bringing anything up, restlessness, distress.
While you travel: This is one of the few genuine drop everything emergencies. Go now, ring from the car.
Deep chested breeds are most at risk: Labradors, German Shepherds, Great Danes, Dobermans.
Ask these on the call
- Is a vet physically present right now, or is this an on call number?
- Can you handle this: surgery, X ray, blood work, oxygen, a transfusion?
- Do you have an ICU, and is someone awake with the animals overnight?
- What should I do in the next twenty minutes while I travel to you?
- Do you take cards or UPI at night, and roughly what should I expect to pay?
Do this tonight, before you need it
- Save one number in your phone tonight, while nothing is wrong. The worst time to learn your regular clinic shuts at 8pm is at 11pm.
- Ring your usual vet tomorrow and ask who they refer to after hours, then save that number too.
- Ask whether they have a pet ambulance. If your dog cannot walk and you cannot lift them, that is the whole problem solved.
- Keep your pet's vaccination record and any current medication list somewhere you can find it in the dark.
