There is no national licensing regime for boarding in India, which means your visit does the work that regulation would do elsewhere.

What those labels actually mean
- Cage free sounds better and is not always better. It suits confident, social dogs and can be miserable for an anxious one who wants somewhere to retreat to. Ask what happens to a dog who does not want to join in.
- Home boarding means your dog stays in someone's house, usually with fewer animals. Better for dogs who find kennels stressful, and it depends entirely on that one household.
- Cameras are reassuring and easy to misread. A camera on the play area tells you nothing about the night.
- Vaccination requirements are a good sign. A facility that does not check is one that accepts dogs nobody else would.
Boarding in Hyderabad specifically
Options concentrate in the western belt around Jubilee Hills and Gachibowli.
Long hot summers, with heatstroke risk from March through June. Winters are comfortable.
The season matters more than people expect
Summer heat is the main risk. Bathukamma and Diwali bring noise stress.
Before you leave them
- ✓Do a short trial first, one night rather than ten. It tells you more than any tour, and it tells your dog that you come back.
- ✓Send their own food. A diet change on top of a new place is the most common reason a dog stops eating in boarding.
- ✓Send something that smells of home, and do not wash it first.
- ✓Write down the medication, the routine and your vet's number, and hand it over rather than saying it at drop off.
- ✓Leave without a long goodbye. Drawn out farewells make it harder, not easier.
- ✓Agree how they will contact you and when, so silence does not become something to worry about.
The visit is the whole thing
- Go in person, in the daytime, without an appointment. What you are told on the phone and what you see are different things.
- Ask to see where the dogs actually sleep, not the reception. A facility comfortable showing you that is telling you something. One that finds a reason not to is also telling you something.
- Count the dogs and count the staff. The ratio is the single number that decides how your dog's day goes.
- Ask who is on site overnight. Plenty of places are staffed until 8pm and empty after that, which is not the same as boarding.
- Ask which vet they use and how quickly they can reach them. Then ring that vet and check the facility is actually a client.
- Ask what happens if your dog will not eat, which is the most common thing that goes wrong and the best test of whether they pay attention.
