3 places worth taking a dog from Kochi, ordered by drive time, each with the month to avoid, the hazard that matters and where dogs cannot go.
Kerala is unusually easy with a dog, because so much of the accommodation is homestays rather than hotels, and a family running a homestay tends to decide about your dog on the spot rather than pointing at a policy.
The drive is the part people underplan. A dog does not experience four hours in a car the way you do, and the difference between a three hour destination and an eight hour one is not twice the effort, it is a different kind of trip. So this is ordered by drive time rather than by how good the place is.
Within four hours of Kochi
These are the ones you can leave after breakfast and arrive at before your dog gets restless. For a senior dog or a flat faced breed, this is the range to stay inside.
Alleppey (Alappuzha), Kerala
About 2 hours from Kochi. Houseboats are the main draw and pet policies vary enormously by operator, so confirm before booking rather than on arrival. Backwater edges are unfenced, so a dog who bolts is a real risk on board.
- Best months: November to February. Worth avoiding June to August, because of monsoon.
- Watch out for: unfenced water edges on houseboats and bunds, humidity and heat, mosquitoes.
- Someone stays back for: most houseboat cruises, unless the operator specifically agrees in advance, temple areas.
- Suits: Short-coated heat-tolerant breeds and Indies.

Munnar, Kerala
About 4 hours from Kochi. Tea estate country with cool air and long walks. Leeches during and after monsoon are unavoidable on wet trails. Eravikulam National Park nearby does not permit pets.
- Best months: September to March. Worth avoiding June to August, because of very heavy monsoon.
- Watch out for: leeches, severe during and after monsoon, elephant movement in some estate and forest fringes, fog on estate roads.
- Someone stays back for: Eravikulam National Park and the Nilgiri Tahr viewing, boating at Mattupetty.
- Suits: Thick-coated breeds and any dog uncomfortable in Kerala humidity at sea level. Genuinely pleasant year round.

Ask your estate host to point out which paths are used by elephants. Fringe areas around Munnar see genuine elephant movement, and it is not a risk to discover on your own at dusk.

Varkala, Kerala
About 4 hours from Kochi. Cliff-top setting with steep steps down to the beach, which is hard on senior dogs and small breeds. Strong currents mean the sea is not a safe swim for dogs.
- Best months: November to March. Worth avoiding monsoon, because of rough seas and rain.
- Watch out for: long steep staircases to the beach, unfenced cliff edges, hot sand midday.
- Someone stays back for: temple beach area, most boat and surf operations.
- Suits: Short-coated heat-tolerant dogs and Indies.

Pick a stay on the cliff itself rather than below. The stairs down to the beach are long and steep, and doing them several times a day with a dog gets old fast.

Two things decide whether a trip works, and neither is the destination. The first is the month. Several places above are genuinely unkind to a dog in the wrong season, and the difference is not comfort, it is safety. The second is where you are staying, because pet policies in India are set per property and change with the owner, so a place that welcomed dogs last year may not this one. Call and get the pet permission added to your booking confirmation in writing.
If you are taking the train rather than driving, read the rules for taking a dog on an Indian train first. Dogs are barred from 2AC, 3AC and Sleeper, which catches out almost everyone, and the parcel office step has to happen on the day.
