Dog Friendly Getaways From Pune: 3 Places, Honestly Assessed
3 places worth taking a dog from Pune, ordered by drive time, each with the month to avoid, the hazard that matters and where dogs cannot go.
Pune sits close enough to the Sahyadris that the hill stations are a morning drive, and close enough to the Konkan that the sea is a long one. The plateau destinations suit almost any dog. The coast needs more thought.
The drive is the part people underplan. A dog does not experience four hours in a car the way you do, and the difference between a three hour destination and an eight hour one is not twice the effort, it is a different kind of trip. So this is ordered by drive time rather than by how good the place is.
Within four hours of Pune
These are the ones you can leave after breakfast and arrive at before your dog gets restless. For a senior dog or a flat faced breed, this is the range to stay inside.
Mahabaleshwar, Maharashtra
About 3 hours from Pune. Cool enough year round to suit thick-coated breeds that struggle on the plains. The ghat road has sharp bends, so a dog prone to car sickness needs breaks and an empty stomach before travel.
- Best months: October to June. Worth avoiding July and August, because of extremely heavy rainfall.
- Watch out for: sharp ghat bends causing car sickness, fog reducing visibility, leeches in monsoon.
- Someone stays back for: boating at Venna Lake, horse riding areas.
- Suits: Thick-coated breeds such as Golden Retrievers, Saint Bernards and Huskies, which struggle on the plains and are comfortable here year round.
- Stays: SaffronStays Horizon, Lifeline Villas, Valley Edge, all worth confirming directly before booking.
Strawberry season runs roughly December to March and the farms are relaxed about dogs outdoors, which makes for an unusually pleasant afternoon with a dog.
Full detail, including vet access and what you can do together, is in our guide to Mahabaleshwar with a dog.
Panchgani, Maharashtra
About 3 hours from Pune. Quieter than neighbouring Mahabaleshwar, with open tablelands that suit dogs who want space to walk. Same winding ghat approach, so plan for motion sickness.
- Best months: October to May. Worth avoiding peak monsoon, because of heavy rain and fog.
- Watch out for: sharp ghat bends causing car sickness, strong wind on the tablelands, monkeys near viewpoints.
- Someone stays back for: horse and buggy rides on Table Land, Mapro garden indoor areas.
- Suits: Thick-coated breeds and senior dogs, because the flat tablelands need far less climbing than most hill stations.
- Stays: Ravine Hotel, Lifeline Villas, Glory Resort, all worth confirming directly before booking.
Table Land is genuinely flat and enormous, which makes it one of the few hill station spots where an older dog can walk properly without stairs or steep gradients.

Worth the longer drive
Everything below is five hours or more. Break the journey if you can, stop every two hours regardless, and travel on a light stomach because car sickness is the most common thing that ruins the first day.
Tarkarli, Maharashtra
About 8 hours from Pune. Clear-water Konkan beaches that are much quieter than Goa. Long drive on winding coastal roads, so plan breaks for a dog prone to car sickness.
- Best months: November to February. Worth avoiding June to September, because of monsoon.
- Watch out for: strong rip currents and rough sea from June to September, hot sand through the middle of the day, jellyfish in the shallows in some seasons.
- Someone stays back for: Sindhudurg Fort and the boat across to it, scuba diving and snorkelling trips.
- Suits: Water-loving breeds have a better time here than almost anywhere else in India. Labradors and retrievers in particular, in the November to February window.
- Stays: Nautical Nook The Beach Villa, all worth confirming directly before booking.
This is the beach Goa used to be, and the homestays are family run rather than corporate, which means a dog is usually a non issue if you mention it when booking. Ask for a place on the Devbagh side. The Tarkarli end fills with weekend groups from Pune and Devbagh stays quiet.

Before you book anything
Two things decide whether a trip works, and neither is the destination. The first is the month. Several places above are genuinely unkind to a dog in the wrong season, and the difference is not comfort, it is safety. The second is where you are staying, because pet policies in India are set per property and change with the owner, so a place that welcomed dogs last year may not this one. Call and get the pet permission added to your booking confirmation in writing.
If you are taking the train rather than driving, read the rules for taking a dog on an Indian train first. Dogs are barred from 2AC, 3AC and Sleeper, which catches out almost everyone, and the parcel office step has to happen on the day.
And if you would rather not plan it yourself, our trip planner will build a day by day plan for your dates, your dog and how you are travelling, and email it to you.
The unglamorous part
A dog who will not go to the toilet in a strange place holds it far longer than is good for them, and a long drive followed by an unfamiliar room is exactly that situation twice over. Carrying a familiar surface from home is the single easiest fix, which is the reason we make a portable coir potty.
