Siliguri is the gateway to the eastern hills, and both of the destinations above it are cold, steep and beautiful. Both also end with a narrow gauge railway or a mountain road, so the last leg is the one to plan around.
The drive is the part people underplan. A dog does not experience four hours in a car the way you do, and the difference between a three hour destination and an eight hour one is not twice the effort, it is a different kind of trip. Within four hours of Siliguri
These are the ones you can leave after breakfast and arrive at before your dog gets restless. For a senior dog or a flat faced breed, this is the range to stay inside.
Darjeeling, West Bengal
About 3 hours from Siliguri. Cold and steep, which suits thick-coated breeds. The approach road is winding and prone to landslides in monsoon. Tea estate walks are the highlight.
- Best months: March to May, October to November. Worth avoiding June to September, because of heavy monsoon and landslides.
- Watch out for: leeches through the monsoon, heavy in the tea gardens, steep drops beside narrow roads with no barrier, cold nights that catch out short-coated dogs.
- Someone stays back for: the zoo and the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, Singalila and the Sandakphu trek.
- Suits: Thick-coated breeds are properly happy here. It is one of the best places in India for a dog that suffers in city heat.
- Stays: Angel Homestay, Laalsa Retreat, Nero Valley Cottage, all worth confirming directly before booking.
Pick a tea estate stay over a town hotel. The estates have their own land, which means your dog gets real off-lead space, and Darjeeling town itself is too steep and too crowded to walk comfortably.

Gangtok, Sikkim
About 4 hours from Siliguri. Clean, cool and walkable in parts. Several high-altitude permits in Sikkim have their own conditions, and higher passes are a genuine altitude risk for dogs.
- Best months: March to May, October to December. Worth avoiding June to September, because of monsoon landslides.
- Watch out for: steep gradients that tire senior dogs quickly, leeches on forest paths during monsoon, landslides on the approach road through the rains.
- Someone stays back for: Tsomgo Lake and Nathula, because of the permit checkposts, the monastery interiors.
- Suits: Thick-coated breeds and dogs that handle damp cold. Sikkim is wet as much as it is cold.
- Stays: Summit Ttakshang Residency Hotel, Tempo Heritage Resort, Keswani Group Tashi Heritage Hotel, all worth confirming directly before booking.
Base yourself in a village stay towards Ranka or Pakyong rather than in Gangtok itself. You lose the MG Marg convenience and gain actual walking country, which is the whole reason to bring a dog to Sikkim.

The second is where you are staying, because pet policies in India are set per property and change with the owner, so a place that welcomed dogs last year may not this one.
