Everything reachable from Jaipur with a dog comes down to one question, which is what month it is. From November to February this is some of the best travelling in India. From April to September it is genuinely unsafe for a dog on hot ground.
The drive is the part people underplan. A dog does not experience four hours in a car the way you do, and the difference between a three hour destination and an eight hour one is not twice the effort, it is a different kind of trip. So this is ordered by drive time rather than by how good the place is.
Within four hours of Jaipur
These are the ones you can leave after breakfast and arrive at before your dog gets restless. For a senior dog or a flat faced breed, this is the range to stay inside.
Pushkar, Rajasthan
About 3 hours from Jaipur. A temple town with strict rules around the lake and ghats, where pets are not permitted. Very crowded during the annual camel fair, which is overwhelming for most dogs.
- Best months: October to March. Worth avoiding April to June, because of extreme heat.
- Watch out for: extreme summer heat, monkeys around the ghats, very heavy crowds during the camel fair.
- Someone stays back for: the ghats and lakefront entirely, Brahma Temple.
- Suits: Short-coated breeds in winter.
- Stays: Annada Resort, Pushkar Risala Resort, Oasis Desert Camp, all worth confirming directly before booking.
The entire lakefront, which is the reason people come to Pushkar, is off limits with a dog. Plan the trip around the outskirts and the desert edges instead, or treat it as a stop rather than a destination.

Ajmer, Rajasthan
About 3 hours from Jaipur. Primarily a pilgrimage city, and the major religious sites do not permit pets. Usually visited alongside Pushkar, which is a short drive away.
- Best months: October to March. Worth avoiding April to June, because of extreme heat.
- Watch out for: extreme summer heat, dense crowds around the dargah, heavy traffic.
- Someone stays back for: Ajmer Sharif Dargah, Adhai Din ka Jhonpra.
- Suits: Short-coated breeds in winter.

Ajmer is a pilgrimage city and the main sites do not admit pets, so it works better as an overnight stop between Jaipur and Udaipur than as a destination with a dog.

Ranthambore, Rajasthan
About 3 hours from Jaipur. Pets are not permitted inside the tiger reserve. As with all Indian national parks, plan on one person staying back with the dog during safaris.
- Best months: October to April. Worth avoiding May to September, because of extreme heat and monsoon closure.
- Watch out for: extreme April to June heat that makes the ground unwalkable by mid morning, leopards on the reserve fringe, which take dogs from village and resort edges after dark, thorn scrub and grass seeds that lodge between paw pads.
- Someone stays back for: every safari in every zone, which is the entire reason people come, Ranthambore Fort and the Ganesh temple inside it.
- Suits: Winter only, and only for dogs that are happy spending most of the day in a garden. Desert-adapted and short-coated Indian breeds handle the dry air best.

Pick your resort for its compound rather than its rating. The ones with a properly walled or fenced garden give your dog somewhere to be while the rest of the family is on safari, and they are also the ones where a leopard cannot wander in at 3am. Ask specifically whether the boundary is complete, not just whether they are pet friendly.

Worth the longer drive
Everything below is five hours or more. Break the journey if you can, stop every two hours regardless, and travel on a light stomach because car sickness is the most common thing that ruins the first day.
Jodhpur, Rajasthan
About 5 hours from Jaipur. Very hot and very dry outside winter. Carry more water than you expect. The old city lanes are narrow and busy, which suits confident dogs and not nervous ones.

- Watch out for: extreme heat and very dry air, narrow crowded lanes, free-roaming cattle.
- Someone stays back for: Mehrangarh Fort, Jaswant Thada.
- Suits: Short-coated desert-tolerant breeds, in winter only.

The blue city lanes are stepped and narrow, which is charming and hard work with a dog. Walk them at first light, then keep the dog on a shaded terrace for the rest of the day.

Before you book anything
Two things decide whether a trip works, and neither is the destination. The first is the month. Several places above are genuinely unkind to a dog in the wrong season, and the difference is not comfort, it is safety. The second is where you are staying, because pet policies in India are set per property and change with the owner, so a place that welcomed dogs last year may not this one. Call and get the pet permission added to your booking confirmation in writing.
